I recently graduated from Cornell University with a Ph.D. in molecular biophysics, and have loved teaching science and math since I began tutoring my classmates when I was in high school. I find that everyone is capable of learning even the most complex subjects, when the teacher is able to connect and communicate effectively with each student as an individual. Empowering students in this way is one of the most rewarding experiences. I have served as a teaching assistant for undergraduate and graduate level classes in molecular biology and genetics, worked at Kumon Math and Reading Learning Center, and as a personal tutor for the past several years.

I offer college, graduate school, and fellowship application review/counseling as well. My experience in successful applications to Princeton University and Cornell University, competitive fellowships such as the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF-GRFP) and Cornell's Deans' Excellence fellowship, have shown me the power of persuasive writing in application preparation. I can help students express their strengths relative to the values of the institutions they are applying to, and balance self-promotion with humility in discussing what they offer as a potential member of an academic community and what they hope to gain from admission. I have helped both high school and undergraduate mentees in their application process, and I look forward to helping others here on Wyzant.

I am able to teach all high school math and science courses; undergraduate math through multivariate calculus and differential equations; general, inorganic, and organic chemistry; and most biology courses including biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology core courses, evolutionary biology, and anatomy and physiology as well. I am happy to teach standardized test materials for the GED and ACT Math and ACT Science.

College Counseling

College Counseling

I have experience with my own successful applications to both Princeton University and Cornell University at the undergraduate and graduate level. I have also been awarded multiple competitive fellowships such as the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF-GRFP), and the Deans excellence fellowship at Cornell University. Applications are essentially persuasive writing exercises, where we describe our strengths in such a way to align with the values of the institution we are applying to. I have developed an understanding of how to balance self-promotion and humility, to express one's value and aptitude, what they have to offer as a member of an academic community, and how they will greatly benefit from admission to that specific institution. I have helped with the graduate school and fellowship applications of my lab mates, and also with the college applications of several high schoolers that I was mentoring in lab. It is a pleasure to work with people in their pursuit of higher education, and I would greatly enjoy continuing this work through Wyzant.
Genetics

Genetics

I have studied the subject of genetics in multiple ways. Academically, I have taken molecular genetics classes that went in-depth on transcription factors, telomere length regulation, the phases of the cell cycle and genes/pathways involved in cancer and programmed cell death. I have also taken classes that taught evolutionary development, and TA'ed for a class that discussed the ethics of different advances in they field of genetics, like CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing and treatment of large genetic databases enabled by companies like 23 and Me. My most recent publication describes the regulation of an oxygen sensitive transcription factor, and provides direct structural characterization showing the binding of this transcription factor to DNA. Additionally, my current role as a postdoctoral researcher involves manipulation of the genomes of both E. coli and P. aeruginosa to study the effects of symbiotic phage infection, using PCR, electroporation, restriction digest/ligation, and Gibson assembly.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Gabrielle knows a lot and patiently makes sure that complicated topics showered on students (in a challenging honors biology and chemistry programs) are broken down in orderly and digestible pieces. For the right effort, the right grades have followed. She is also good at reverting back timely with the written material/visuals/citation. Overall, excellent biology, organic and inorganic chemistry tutor!
