Part of arithmetic is memorization. I devote time to helping with memorization if that's needed. After memorization has been mastered, it is important to become fluent with the rules for solving simple math problems. I spend time helping students secure the rules until following them becomes second nature if that's needed.
I know the rules of grammar backwards and forwards. I've been an editor and a writer for many years. I even know how to diagram sentences. I help students think about sentences and help the work with sentence structure. The more we play with structuring sentences, the more we observe our power to write. I help students gain a sense of authority in this domain.
