Hi! I’m Yasmine, a mixed-genre writer, multimedia artist, and teaching artist! My art across mediums explores queer joy, mixed race narratives, the military-industrial complex, and navigating the medical system as a person with chronic illness. I teach creative writing and professional development workshops for artists, and I coach writers and artists one-on-one.
I offer holistic individual coaching for writers seeking guidance on cultivating sustainable writing practices, craft techniques, planning projects, developing and refining manuscripts (including chapbooks, full-length poetry manuscripts, flash creative nonfiction, long-form critical and personal essays, essay collections, and memoir), and submitting to literary magazines. I also offer application support for artist statements, awards, grants, fellowships, retreats, the MFA, and jobseekers.
Both my teaching and coaching practice are grounded in my formal education in creative writing and psychology as well as my background as a published writer. I have an MFA in Creative Writing from Virginia Tech, a BA in English and psychology from Johns Hopkins University, and a Trauma Informed Teaching Artistry Certification from the Bartol Foundation, where I coordinate workshops and events for teaching artist continuing education. I have taught in a variety of settings, both at the university level and in the community, for over a decade. And, in addition to working on literary magazines, and serving as a juror for grants and awards, my own work has been published in places like POETRY, the Sun, Ploughshares. I’ve also been the recipient of several arts awards, including from Poets and Writers, MASS MoCA, and Monson Arts.
When I am not writing or teaching, you can find me crafting or cuddling with my kittens, Luna and Artemis!

I am a professional writer whose nonfiction and poetry is published or forthcoming in Ploughshares, Narrative, The Rumpus, Nimrod, Shenandoah, and elsewhere -- which is to say that I am always in the writing process myself and understand how challenging and rewarding it can be. I have worked with students at all stages in the writing process (brainstorming, drafting, revising, proofreading), and I am particularly interested in working with students with writing anxiety, as this is a research area of mine. I have 5+ years of experience working with students applying to college, including undergraduate and graduate admissions, transfer essays, medical school, law school, business school, MFA admissions, and more. I also have 3 years of experience teaching college-level composition and creative writing -- including personal essays! I also have editorial experience with the Johns Hopkins University Press as well as literary magazines such as AGNI, the Minnesota Review, and The Worcester Review, and I have served as a juror for the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

Knowledgable and Nice Tutor

Yasmine is great!! Yasmine helped me with my personal statement for my grad school application. She helped me improve the content, structure, and sentences of my statements. She is very knowledgeable about the application process and she knows what the committee wants to see. Yasmine's teaching is very encouraging and intellectually inspiring. She not only polished my statement but also taught strategies I can use in future writings. Also, Yasmine is very patient, thoughtful, and approachable. It was great to work with her!

Impressive tutor and well worth the price!

So far I've had 2 lessons with Yasmine, and I don't plan to stop. I came to her wanting to sharpen my writing skills and guidance on a novel idea, and after just one session she made a whole curriculum tailored to my needs! That being said, she is still open to feedback and flexible if I want to use our time in a different way. She puts a lot of effort in planning and thinking about my personal growth, so it feel like I'm getting way more than an hour's worth of time for each lesson. Yasmine's enthusiasm is infectious and helps build my confidence as a novice writer. Having a teacher that celebrates your wins and appreciates your unique perspective is invaluable. If you're hesitant about scheduling a lesson with Yasmine, I highly encourage you to take advantage of her free phone consultation. It's refreshing to see a tutor that gives away time just get to know a potential student, and it's an opportunity to see if she as a great fit for you, too. 10/10!
