Hi there! I'm Robert, and I'm currently at the Curtis Institute of Music as a Conducting Fellow. I tutor music theory, ear training and dictation, and music history.

I'm an honors graduate of the Johns Hopkins University and Peabody Conservatory, where I completed a Double Degree in Physics and Music (clarinet performance). While there, I worked as a Teaching Assistant and realized my passion for teaching. I completed my Master's Degree in Orchestral Conducting at the Mannes School of Music, where I tutored students in music theory and analysis.

As a conductor, I use the tools of music theory, music history, and ear training every day to analyze scores and prepare for rehearsals. I love teaching, and use books as well as exercises at the piano to improve students' musical skills. I strongly believe that ear training is a skill to be acquired through practice and training, and that belief is borne out of experience. I will work with students to improve their understanding of music theory and analysis, improve their ears through dictation exercises at the piano, and/or delve into the wonderful subject of music history. Side note: if students are up for it, I'm a big fan of Schenkerian Analysis.

Ear Training

As a conductor, I spent years training my ear and have taught students throughout my career. I believe in the power of strategy and repetition to help students improve their hearing.

Sight Singing

As a conductor, I spent years training my ability to sight sing and have taught students throughout my career. Starting at whatever level is comfortable, I teach using the foundation of intervals and tonal exercises all the way to the atonal rows of Modus Novus. I believe in the power of strategy and repetition to help students improve their ability to sight sing.

Very knowledgeable and patient

My daughter recently had a lesson with Robert for a composition in her Music Theory class. He is by far the best tutor we’ve had and we appreciate his widespread knowledge on all instruments and the application of concepts that he offered. Highly recommend him!!
