Hello! My name is Kieona, and I am a recent graduate from the University of Pennsylvania. I studied neurobiology and am currently researching neurodevelopment. I'm originally from Oklahoma City and enjoy traveling, reading, and trying new restaurants in my spare time. I have found throughout my studies that there is a significant difference between knowing enough to pass an exam and having a functional base from which to draw conclusions and make evaluations on a subject. Further, during my time at Penn I have come to realize that there is also a difference between mastery of a subject and mastery of pedagogical technique, and have come to realize that the passion and enthusiasm a professor has for teaching can make all of the difference when it comes to students learning and retaining fundamentals of a subject. This is what I will to bring to my tutoring services - enthusiasm and creative teaching styles to help my tutees retain and master the subjects they want, and a collaborative approach to learning that sparks a long-term appreciation for science, philosophy, reading, and writing. I have always found my academic pursuits to be both enjoyable and rewarding, and love having the opportunity to foster an appreciation of the pursuit of knowledge.

I have been an informal tutor for younger students since I was in elementary school, was involved in piloting an after-school peer tutoring program at my high school, and have volunteered as a college admissions coach/essay reader throughout my time in college. I scored a 780 on SAT Reading, and have always had very strong competency in reading assessments. I have also volunteered to tutor for the QuestBridge program after being selected as a match semifinalist. I have extensive experience working one on one with other students and a wide variety of learning styles. As a tutor, I believe collaboration and an open, relaxed environment so that students feel comfortable asking every question which may help them better process information or grasp complex subjects.

As I entered college I became involved with Collge Admissions coaching, including ACT prep, for the QuestBridge Program. I love to read, and would be very pleased to help you boost your score in this subject!

I applied to college through the QuestBridge College Match Program and was named a Semi-Finalist. I was admitted to 11/13 schools I applied to including the University of Pennsylvania, Brown, Vanderbilt, Rice, and Amherst. Throughout my time at Penn, I have volunteered to mentor younger students as they have applied to college, so I have knowledge of the Common Application and presenting each student's unique story in the most advantageous light.

I study neurobiology at Penn and have successfully completed the introductory genetics course here. I also work in a lab with my own independent project on the development of cell types in the brain, and their contributions to neuropathologies. This means that I frequently read primary literature on the subject which involves genetic traits, gene regulation, and genetic methods.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor
