I work via Wyzant and IOR Global and have a TESOL Workshop certification through U Penn's Graduate School of Education.

I have also taught youth education for over 10 years (2+ years teaching ESL in Philly, 7 years of literacy and science in SF with museums and nonprofits, and several years teaching kids with learning disabilities in NY).

My strengths are teaching conversational English, reading comprehension, grammar, and writing. I am a meticulous editor and can help students with their writing skills and general study skills. I have lived abroad and I know how to listen. Students make progress when they are given time to speak about things that interest them.

I offer lessons at people's homes (within 10 miles of Philadelphia's Center City), over Skype, and in public places, like cafes, libraries, etc. I enjoy working with students new to Philadelphia, helping them adjust to the local culture and language. I also enjoy helping people enjoy reading and writing, so they can thrive in their work and social life. I am married and have an 8-year-old boy. My schedule is flexible.

ESL/ESOL

I'm an ESL tutor with a TESOL Workshop certification through UPenn. Teaching non-native speakers how to thrive in the U.S. has become a passion for me. I have lived abroad and understand how difficult it is to successfully learn another language. I work with all levels of English speakers, from beginners who must start with the alphabet and the basics to advanced learners who want to hone their pronunciation. My strengths as a tutor are to identify what students need and tailor my lessons to the most useful things for each person.

I have worked for many years with both children and adults to improve literacy. I have used books as a learning tool in my past work as a Science Educator at a children's museum, as a Lead Teacher at Tree Frog Treks, and as an Art Teacher for Young Rembrandts. With my ESL students, I often use the library as a resource to get appropriate reading material we can use together. I am particularly skilled at working with children and adults on reading comprehension, which is one of the most crucial skills.

really helpful and responsible tutor

Katherine worked very carefully and responsibly on my personal statement and essays for my application for dental schools. Excellent writing and communication skills. Perfect language tutor for international students who want to know more about American culture and who want to improve their English level. I am very thankful for her help.

EMILY YOU YOU, 1 lesson with Katherine

Best Teacher

Katherine is a great teacher for kids. She does after-school lessons for our 2nd and 5th grade boys in reading, writing, and math. They are happy to learn new study skills from her. Katherine is dependable and knows how to figure out what each student needs. I highly recommend her.
