About Katherine

I love teaching and helping people improve their communication skills. I have ~5 years ESL tutoring experience with adults (at LADO in DC, privately in NY, and through the Peace Corps in West Africa). I also have a TESOL Workshop certification through U Penn's Graduate School of Education.

I have also taught youth education for 7+ years (3 years at a museum in the Bay Area, where I taught kids about nature and literacy and 4 years in after-school science programming with Tree Frog Treks and CES in San Francisco).

My strengths are teaching conversational English, reading comprehension, grammar, and writing. I am a meticulous editor and can help students with their writing skills and general study skills. I have lived abroad and I know how to listen. Students make progress when they are given time to speak about things that interest them.

Currently, I give lessons at people's homes (within 10 miles of Philadelphia's Center City), over Skype, and in public places, like cafes, libraries, etc. I also have taken students new to Philadelphia to cultural and historical sites as part of our lessons. I am married and have a 6-year-old boy and a 7-year old dog. My schedule is flexible. I look forward to helping you improve your English.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I'm an ESL tutor with a TESOL Workshop certification through UPenn. Teaching non-native speakers how to thrive in the U.S. has become a passion for me. I have lived abroad and understand how difficult it is to successfully learn another language.

I work with all levels of English speakers, from beginners who must start with the alphabet and the basics to advanced learners who want to hone their pronunciation.

My strengths as a tutor are to identify what students need and tailor my lessons to the most useful things for each person.

Reading

I have worked for many years with both children and adults to improve literacy. I have used books as a learning tool in my past work as a Science Educator at a children's museum, as a Lead Teacher at Tree Frog Treks, and as an Art Teacher for Young Rembrandts.

With my ESL students, I often use the library as a resource to get appropriate reading material we can use together. I am particularly skilled at working with children and adults on reading comprehension, which is one of the most crucial skills.

Writing

I have a graduate degree focusing on environmental policy and writing. No matter what subject, I will be able to help you organize your thoughts into the right format and work on grammar issues with you.

Katherine has answered some grammar questions that for sure will help develop a better fluency. She is is a great listener and pays attention to every detail in such a way that I'm improving my pronunciation and vocabulary.
