About Elaine

I am currently a graduate student and teaching assistant in Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania. During the course of my studies I have run recitations and workshops for mathematics courses from the pre-freshman to the postgraduate level, and have planned, designed, and taught two full-credit summer courses from scratch. I have been privately tutoring students for over a decade, and have experience in tutoring subjects from Algebra I to Calculus and beyond.

I believe strongly that mathematics is a skill that anybody can learn, and that it is just the way mathematics is taught in traditional settings that may not suit everyone perfectly. As such, I try to bring flexibility, empathy, and patience to my approach to tutoring. I also try to build in mathematical intuition and connections to more abstract ideas whenever possible, as I believe this helps students retain concepts and feel more comfortable with the techniques and tools they are expected to know.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I have been the sole instructor for a full course of Introductory Calculus at the University of Pennsylvania, and have also been the teaching assistant at all levels of Calculus. I have been tutoring this subject for more than five years and have experience with dozens of students.

Differential Equations

I have been a teaching assistant for the Partial Differential Equations course in the spring of 2015, and was the sole instructor for that course in the summer of 2015 at the University of Pennsylvania.

Linear Algebra

I have tutored in the U. of Penn version of this course, Math 240, for many students and have designed and conducted interviews for prospective tutors in the subject for the Tutoring Center. I also have a graduate-level knowledge of the subject.

Statistics

I have tutored for the courses STAT 430 and STAT 512 at the University of Pennsylvania, covering the standard advanced undergraduate probability curriculum (normal, binomial, chi-squared, exponential, Poisson, Beta distributions, etc.; conditional probability, joint probability, variance, expectation, moments) as well as statistics curriculum (minimal variance unbiased estimators, Cramer-Rao, Rao-Blackwell, likelihood estimation, hypothesis testing).

GREAT tutor - glad I chose Elaine!! — I am so grateful for Elaine's help!! She responded to my inquiry quickly and was flexible. She was able to explain everything I needed help with in a manner that was easy to understand, and she is very friendly. Before the session I was so lost. After the session I was ready to take the exam. You need to have Elaine as your tutor if you need math help in the areas she covers (which are many)!! THA ...
