I hold a Master's in Elementary Education. I recently changed my career from account management, after I realized I would rather have a job I actually enjoyed!

Since becoming a teacher, I have found that connecting students lessons with real life experiences helps make a more comprehensive learning experience. Today's schools are "teaching to the test" and tutoring is a great way for students to get the genuine learning experience they deserve. Tutoring gives children the supplemental education they are missing in class. Offering one to one exchange is wonderful for children who have more questions than one teacher can answer in a class of 20 to 30.

The library is a great place to have lessons. The atmosphere is already set for learning. I meet my students in the library close their homes. Neighborhood libraries are a convenient location for families. It's a safe, wide open space where we can spread our books around and get to the task at hand...learning.

While earning my Master's in Elementary Education at St Joseph's University, I did much research on how today's large classes and less personal attention has had a major impact on children's education. Through experience, I've learned that thematic instruction is a great way to get a better understanding, whether teaching a large group or in a one on one setting. For example, using reading to help teach math yields great results. This kind of learning can lead to critical thinking, which is necessary inside and outside the classroom.

Phonics

When earning my M.S. in Elementary Education the two classes that focused on phonics were Reading and Language 1 & 2. As a teacher I use strategies like creating word walls for word families, consonant blends and high frequency words. When tutoring I use decoding for letter-sound issues and root words, because I find it more effective in a one on one setting. Once a student conquers phonics, their reading becomes more accurate and fluent and they begin to enjoy reading.
