About Kristen

Hello! My name is Kristen! I am a recent graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Criminology and a Spanish Certificate. I am pursuing a Master's of Science in Secondary Education also at UPenn and have taken several courses on learning and development in students of all ages. I have also worked in several tutoring and mentoring capacities for several years, working with students of all ages. I truly love working with children in academic capacities, helping to show them how fun learning can be!

I specialize in elementary and secondary tutoring in all subjects; math, science, social studies and especially English/language arts. Additionally, I know that higher math can be scary, but I am confident in my ability to assess whatever challenges your student may be having and provide a concrete solution. One of the most important exams a Junior or Senior will take is the SAT or ACT and I can work one on one with your student to boos their score significantly, helping them to focus on strategies to succeed on the sections that generally trouble them. I think because of my age and experience, I relate well to children of all ages, whether its a second grader struggling with subtraction or an 11th grader having difficulty with Algebra 2. I connect well with each student individually, establish a rapport and boost their confidence in their academic abilities. Especially during exam periods, which I know can be very stressful, I am confident in my ability to help and motivate!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

All elementary subjects from math to English and language arts, social studies and science are available. I have worked for tutoring and mentoring programs for the past 4 years, specializing in elementary and middle school students. I specialize in the fortification of basic math skills such as manipulation of times tables (which helps with basic and advanced multiplication and division), use and application of fractions, reading and comprehension skills, and general patterns of learning to help children become more successful. I have taken several courses on learning and knowledge acquisition, helping me to recognize how students learn differently and how we can capitalize on students' strengths in order to make them the most successful student possible.

Study Skills

I can help with skills to help prepare for upcoming exams (both academic and college preparatory) or skills to remain organized with impending final examinations. I have taken several courses on learning and knowledge acquisition in students of all different learning styles and ages, so I aim to effectively assess a student's difficulty and find a solution that is helpful for them. There are many different types of study systems a student can employ to maximize their study time, and I will work one-on-one with each student to find that system!
