Hi and Welcome!

During my 40+ years career as a Laser Optics scientist/engineer, Information Technology Specialist and programmer I used to apply mathematics on a daily basis. I was born in St.Petersburg (former Leningrad) where I got MS in Optical Engineering and PhD in Applied Mathematics and Physics. Since 1993 I have been living in the USA, where I continue my professional activity. I also conduct private tutoring to share my knowledge, to teach, mentor and coach preschool, elementary, middle, high school, and college students. No wonder that during my stay in the USA, I provide tutoring services for 20 years.

I believe that in most cases each student needs an individual approach based on his/her overall experience, interest in topic and natural abilities in logical thinking, analyzing problems, reasoning and drawing conclusions.

Whether a particular student needs help in solving school home tasks, or in preparation for tests like PSAT, SAT, AMC, AIME (to name a few), or wants to broaden knowledge and expertise in subjects beyond the school course, I can help while applying various and individual approaches. I enjoy helping students and see them reaching their goals.

I speak in English and Russian.

Thank you for your interest!

I'm a native Russian speaker. I have a broad knowledge of several disciplines that are covered in school and college basic courses. Among them are Russian grammar and Basic Russian Language. Depending on the student’s goal, knowledge, and abilities I apply various approaches and cover topics in different ways. Details may vary depending on whether student: - needs additional help while studying Russian in the school or college, or - wants to master and exercise his Russian language, or - wants to be fluent in Russian to communicate with people, or - wants to read and understand Russian literature, or - has business and wants in deep understanding of his Russian partners business documents, or - is preparing for a trip as a tourist and wants to learn in advance the basic history, traditions, style of life, etc My favorite approach is to talk about situations that happened to the student I am working with. From there we cover all basic grammar topics, working together on representing the situation in details, first become familiar with words and nouns, how to pronounce them, how to write them, making phrases, applying verbs, adjectives, etc. Then while exploring the situation we learn how to build sentences, how to represent situation as if it happened in the past, or going on now, or will happen in the future. We may read together student’s favorite book, read it in English and express in Russian in different ways to understand in deep words meanings, how to make interpretation as close as possible, etc. While covering particular topics or situation we may explore, say, topic like “Russians in Philadelphia”, and talk about what they are doing

Great tutor in hard, competitive math

Yuri has tutored my son for the last two years in challenging competitive math contests such as AMC 12 (American Mathematics Competition) and AIME (American Invitation Mathematics Examination). He has helped my son improved his math and logic problems solving skills tremendously. I would recommend Yuri to tutor anyone interested in learning to solve difficult and challenging mathematics.

Patient tutor

Yuri taught me physics, which was difficult topic to learn on my own. With only two sessions with him I was able to comprehend the content pretty easily. I highly recommend Yuri for you tutoring sessions.

Challenging and engaging tutor that keeps a student on his toes

Yuri challenges student's ability to think logically and not to just give a correct answer, but prove it and consider other ways of solving a problem. His style is engaging, probing but not condescending. He seems to present fundamentals of mathematics by visualization and everyday application, which allows a student to connect and truly understand it, vs. memorize and mechanically solve. We are looking forward to the next lesson!
