I have a PhD in US History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I have four years' experience as a teaching assistant in college classrooms and was recognized by the university for my excellence in teaching. I love showing students how exciting history can be! It can be difficult in history classes to find the bigger picture among all the names and dates, but I can help. My history tutoring can focus on understanding course material, taking effective notes, study skills, and/or writing essays for history classes.
I also have a lot of experience as a writing tutor. I started peer tutoring in college and continued to teaching writing in a history-specific writing lab in graduate school. I aim to demystify essay writing by explaining the unspoken conventions your teachers are looking for. I can help with any part of the writing process, from brainstorming to proofreading. My writing tutoring style focuses on asking questions, which helps students to explain and own their writing choices.
I can also help with younger students. I tutored a student in language arts and social studies starting when he was in seventh grade all the way through to his high school graduation. With my help, he moved from standard to honors (and then AP) English and social studies classes. I can help your student with reading comprehension and critical thinking.
I'm looking forward to working together!
