Hi, I'm Charlie, a Psychology major and English minor at the University of Pennsylvania. I tutor K-12 students in writing, reading comprehension, grammar, and SAT verbal test prep (Reading and Writing & Language), plus AP English Language and Literature. I work with students online across the country and in person around the Philadelphia area.

My sessions are structured, encouraging, and tailored to your student. We'll set a clear goal at the start, work through concrete examples, and finish with a small take-home task so progress compounds between sessions. I'm especially good with reluctant writers; I was one, and I know the tricks that help an essay actually come together.

Educational background: I'm currently pursuing a B.A. in Psychology with an English minor at the University of Pennsylvania. I scored a 1450 on the SAT, so I know the verbal sections from the inside: what the test actually rewards and where students lose points they shouldn't.

Tutoring approach: I work with elementary readers on foundational decoding and comprehension, middle schoolers on essay structure and vocabulary, and high schoolers on SAT verbal, AP English, and college application essays. I break big tasks (a college essay, a 40-question SAT reading section, a five-paragraph argument) into small, repeatable steps so students leave each session knowing exactly what to do next.

I recently navigated the SAT, AP English, and college application essays myself, so the material is fresh. Sessions are warm, structured, and judgment-free. I was recently in your student's shoes, and I know what actually moves the needle.

Looking forward to meeting you and your student. Message me any time with questions about fit, scheduling, or a specific assignment.

Approved Subjects

English

English

I am a UPenn undergraduate with a Psychology major and English minor, and I tutor K-12 students across the full range of English coursework: reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and literary analysis. My sessions focus on building real skills rather than just getting through an assignment, so students learn a repeatable process they can apply to future classes and standardized tests. I especially enjoy working with students who feel stuck or behind in English and helping them rebuild confidence through small, concrete wins. I bring a calm, conversational style, honest feedback, and a strong belief that any student can become a capable reader and writer with the right support.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I'm an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania studying Psychology with a minor in English, so essay writing is both my academic bread and butter and the skill I most enjoy teaching. I work with K-12 students on every part of the process: brainstorming a thesis, outlining an argument, drafting clear paragraphs, and revising for clarity, voice, and grammar. I'm especially comfortable with narrative and personal essays (including college-application essays), literary analysis, and five-paragraph academic essays. My approach is structured but conversational, I teach students a repeatable process so they can tackle the next essay on their own, not just the one we're working on together.
Executive Functioning

Executive Functioning

I have spent years working closely with my younger brother, who has ADHD, helping him build routines, break large projects into manageable steps, and develop systems for keeping track of assignments and deadlines. That experience shaped my interest in executive functioning as a Psychology major at the University of Pennsylvania, where I have taken coursework in child development and cognitive strategies. I understand that students with EF challenges often grasp the material but struggle with the scaffolding around it, so I focus my sessions on building practical habits for planning, prioritization, and completing work on time rather than lecturing about content they already know.
Homeschool

Homeschool

Homeschool students and their families often need a tutor who can work during the school day, bring strong humanities instruction to their kids' curriculum, and meet each student where they are rather than on a fixed pace. I offer weekday daytime availability (which most tutors cannot), along with a Psychology major and English minor from the University of Pennsylvania that lets me support reading comprehension, writing, literature, and critical thinking at any level from elementary through high school. I spent a summer working closely with my two young nephews on their reading development, which gave me direct experience tailoring lessons to a single student's pace and interests outside of a classroom setting. My coursework in child development at Penn also informs how I adapt material for different ages and learning styles.
Interview Prep

Interview Prep

I have been on both sides of the interview table many times. As a high school senior, I interviewed for multiple Ivy League schools (including the University of Pennsylvania, where I now study) and went through the full multistage interview process for the United States Naval Academy, which is widely regarded as one of the most rigorous admissions interviews in the country. Since then, I have interviewed for multiple coaching positions at private preparatory schools and have walked friends and peers through their own college and job interviews. In high school I served on the board of our Model UN program, which involved interviewing prospective delegates, so I understand what interviewers listen for and where candidates typically lose points. I focus my sessions on helping students answer confidently, structure their stories, and avoid the small verbal habits that undermine strong content.
ISEE

ISEE

I am a UPenn undergraduate with a 1450 SAT and strong verbal fundamentals, and I tutor students preparing for the ISEE on the Verbal Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Essay sections. For Verbal Reasoning I work with students on synonyms, sentence completion strategy, and high-frequency academic vocabulary in context. For Reading Comprehension I teach a repeatable approach to passage mapping, identifying main idea versus supporting detail, and handling inference and tone questions under timing. For the Essay I help students plan, draft, and revise a clear structured response to the prompt so their writing shows organization and specific detail within the time limit. Each plan is built around the student's target level (Lower, Middle, or Upper) and their individual practice test results.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

Public speaking has been a thread through my academic life since high school, where I performed at my school's Poetry Fest showcase, recited in front of the entire student body, and earned awards in high school public speaking. At the University of Pennsylvania, I have carried that experience into coursework that relies heavily on oral presentation, including classes in my Psychology major and English minor. When I tutor public speaking, I work with students on the two parts that actually move the needle: writing a speech that lands, and the physical delivery (pacing, eye contact, handling nerves, and cutting filler words).
