Hello! I hold a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. My academic training focuses on thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, chemistry, and computational modelling, and I have extensive experience helping students understand challenging STEM subjects. During my doctoral studies, for two academic semesters, I served as a teaching assistant for a graduate-level course in Advanced Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics, where I worked closely with first-year graduate students to help them master difficult theoretical concepts and solve complex quantitative problems.
In this role, I held weekly office hours, guided students through homework and exam preparation, and provided one-on-one mentoring to support their learning. I also collaborated with the course professor to develop assignments and exam questions and delivered a guest lecture when the professor was unavailable. Earlier in my academic career, I worked as a teaching assistant for introductory general chemistry laboratory courses, where I helped first-year undergraduate students learn laboratory techniques and develop problem-solving skills. Through these experiences, I have taught students in both classroom and individual tutoring settings, ranging from introductory chemistry to graduate-level thermodynamics.
My teaching philosophy focuses on helping students build a strong conceptual understanding of certain subjects. Rather than helping out students solve certain problems, I focus on helping them develop their own way of understanding a certain topic. I don't give them fish for one day; I teach them to fish so they can feed themselves without help afterwards. I tutor students from high school to graduate school levels, in subjects including chemistry, calculus, thermodynamics, and chemical engineering fundamentals. I am fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese, and I look forward to meeting students with all backgrounds!
