My name is Jordan Walsh, and I am a Philadelphia-based teacher currently working on his PhD at Temple University. As instructor of record at Temple, I have taught classes in composition, literature, and film, all of them geared toward a wide audience of students with all manner of academic and professional goals.
My interest in tutoring with Wyzant comes from my experience as a college writing instructor. As part of my composition course (otherwise known as First Year Writing), I require my students to periodically meet with me one-on-one to discuss their papers-in-progress. I have found these meetings to be the most productive part of the course, and have found that I can have the greatest impact on students when I have the ability to tailor my instruction and advice to their specific needs. I want to use this experience to work with more students and help them achieve their writing goals.
My approach with students is conversational and friendly, and often focused on boosting their confidence. I've found that many students coming in to college are uncomfortable with writing, that they undervalue their ability to write clearly and coherently. I strive to lift them up, to meet them at their level and push them into the next phase of their writing journey. I've seen success with college writers of all levels.
In addition to my experience with college writing, I have also worked with younger students and participated in the scoring of AP Language and Composition essays, the latter opportunity bringing me a greater understanding of how students can be successful in a standardized testing setting. I want to use this experience to help students working toward a wider array of goals as I finish my dissertation at Temple.
