Bio

Hello, I'm Oliver!
I have a B.S. in engineering with a focus on embedded systems from Swarthmore College. Over the past 5 years I’ve worked as a private math tutor, Spanish tutor, as a volunteer for the Reading Partners organization, and as a math tutor for the Chester PA Children's Chorus program. I've enjoyed tutoring in individual sessions, small group & classroom formats, and with students of all ages. I now tutor Algebra 1&2, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus.

I love getting to share what I know about these subjects! I think people learn best when they feel positively about their relationship with education, so I focus heavily on adapting how I teach to fit each student’s academic and personal needs. A typical lesson begins by introducing a new subject in a fun way using real-world examples. I’ll work step by step through some problems, where I encourage students to ask lots of questions until they have a general understanding of the content. I then have students gradually take more of a leading role in working through exercises until they feel comfortable navigating it on their own. We spend time discussing any areas of confusion, and I ensure students can explain their work to make sure we come away with more than a surface level understanding of what’s going on. We can practice with contextual problems, challenge questions, and discuss how this relates to the rest of the content they’ve been learning.

Whether you feel like you can’t keep up with a class, or you want to keep your grades where they are, school can get pretty stressful. So often it just takes someone to meet a student where they are–to explain things in a way that works for them–for things to make sense. It’s important to me that students are offered teaching styles that help them learn best, so they can meet whatever academic goals they might have. Feel free to reach out if you’d like any more information, or to schedule a session!

Approved Subjects

Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have plenty of experience tutoring Algebra 2. I've taught students from a variety of backgrounds, from different types of schools all over the country, and at different levels. From students who felt like they were falling behind, to students looking to get ahead in their class, and everyone in between. I've gained lots of experience adapting how I teach Algebra 2 to meet each student's needs, and we've had lots of success meeting student's academic goals!
Calculus

Calculus

I worked with Calculus all throughout my time studying Engineering in college. Pretty much everything in Engineering relies heavily on Calculus so I'm very familiar with it by now. Over the past couple years I've tutored a wide variety of students in this subject, learning how to adapt the content to fit different student's needs. We've had lots of success of meeting student's academic goals!
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalculus is the subject I've tutored most often over the past few years. I've taught students from a variety of backgrounds, from different types of schools all over the country, and at different levels. From students who felt like they were falling behind, to students looking to get ahead in their class, and everyone in between. I've gained lots of experience adapting how I teach Pre-Calc to meet each student's needs, and we've had lots of success meeting student's academic goals!
SAT Math

SAT Math

I scored a 1510 on the SAT when I took it, and have been tutoring the SAT math section for several years since. This experience has helped me develop plenty of strategies for identifying which areas students need to work on, and how best to help different students make these improvements
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

As a part of the engineering research I've conducted, I've worked a lot with trig and would give presentations explaning a lot of the trig-related work we did to a variety of audiences. I lean on this experience a lot when walking students through trigonometry courses, finding the best way to help each individual work on their understanding.

Such a helpful tutor!

Oliver really understands the math we study, and he is a nice, fun tutor. He has great ways of making sure I understand a problem totally before going on to the next one and he can always figure out just what kind of help I need when I’m not understanding something. Sometimes he knows to explain something in a new way or just that I need to do more practice problems to get comfortable with whatever I’m learning. We’re doing the rational root theorem now and I was basically able to learn it all in one session even though I was super confused at first. He’s the best, thank you so much!
