I am a kind and encouraging former elementary school assistant teacher with a master's in environmental studies from the University of Pennsylvania, where my GPA was 3.94. My skills would be suited for students interested in furthering their understanding of environmental topics. I have some experience tutoring high school physics as well, having received my undergraduate degree from Syracuse University in Physics, with a minor in English.

My approach to tutoring is to support conceptual understanding as a foundation and then help build procedural facility as a means of making knowledge practical in a real world context, or practicable in homework. It's important to allow students the opportunity to grapple with material, and then to assist prior to the point of frustration, or redirect to allow for a continued sense of forward motion while developing creative resiliency.

I have worked with students ranging from elementary through high school (and even some adults) in outdoor adventure settings since 2009, and then as an assistant teacher in the classroom with 3rd and 5th grade from 2018 through 2023, at which point I returned to school for my master's. These experiences have given me an intuitive understanding of the learning journeys that many different students face in various age groups with a variety of material (math, science, writing, reading, etc). I also am a skilled guitar player and would love the opportunity to pass along this passion.

Finally, it is important to address different kinds of problems, questions, and assignments in a manner that is appropriate to the material. When dealing with problems of a single solution, it is key to develop a road map from point A to Point B and to act as a reliable and encouraging guide, while the student drafts a road map of their own. For open ended questions with many conceivable answers, students should be encouraged to think critically for themselves in age/level appropriate ways, so they can develop confidence in the power of their own mind.

Environmental Science

Environmental Science

I received my master's in environmental studies from the University of Pennsylvania with a cumulative GPA of 3.94. I have over a decade of experience working with students of varying ages in outdoor adventure settings, 4 years of experience in the classroom as an elementary assistant teacher (and regular science substitute), and experience with 1 on 1 tutoring in physics and running an elementary environmental action club. I have worked for three years with a land trust as an Agroecology Project Coordinator and Conservation Associate. Finally, I have worked as a volunteer and paid employee with a local water protection volunteer program for several years.
Guitar

Guitar

I am an experienced guitar player with proficiency in a variety of styles including electric, acoustic finger picking, and classical. I am also approaching 15 years of experience working with children of varying ages as an outdoor educator and elementary school classroom assistant teacher. I also have experience with at home audio recording and engineering from classes I took as an undergraduate and personal recording projects, and I would be capable of bringing recording equipment to my in-person students. I took guitar lessons throughout middle and high school, in which I was taught various guitar techniques, underlying theory, and learned songs that interested me. I was then recorded by my teacher to have fun and solidify my learning in a real performance. I would use similar strategies, focusing on recognizing fingering patterns and listening.
