My tutoring journey began my sophomore year at Cornell University in 2021, where I tutored for the Learning Strategies Center. One particularly memorable experience involved tutoring a student in cell biology. By guiding her through various study strategies, reviewing course content and practice materials, and tailoring her exam preparation to suit her individual needs, I had the privilege of witnessing her progress and success.

When guiding students towards success, I typically first ask students if they understand their learning style, as that often shapes how effective their study habits are. I would then ask what methods they are currently using to study. One memorable moment from my first year of medical school was serving as a teaching assistant for the Drexel Pathway to Medical School (DPMS) Master’s program, which I had completed the year prior. I spoke with a student who was struggling in human anatomy and consistently scored no higher than a C on her exams. I asked her if she knew her learning style, and she stated no. I offered a website that allowed her to discover it, as well as provided advice on how to tweak the various things she was currently doing to make them more efficient.

As an MCAT coordinator for the master’s program, I have worked closely with students from underrepresented backgrounds, organizing targeted review sessions and refining MCAT strategies tailored to their unique learning styles. I saw firsthand how self-doubt often held students back more than the content itself. Many expressed frustration, feeling that standardized testing created an additional barrier to entering medical school. I made it my mission to not only teach concepts but to instill confidence by reminding students that they belonged in medicine. Knowing that I had played a role in their journey to medical school reaffirmed my dedication to academic mentorship.
