Hi everyone! My name is Elizabeth and I am finishing up my first year at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Human Science from Georgetown University. While my background is extensively science-heavy, I have a decent amount of experience tutoring in the humanities as well.
To focus on my science background first, I worked as a teaching assistant (TA) at Georgetown for a year in the Genetics department. There, I helped students understand complex genetics topics and taught the laboratory course. I was also an independent researcher in a DNA double-strand break repair lab for three years, where I extensively studied the mechanics behind DNA repair. In this role, I not only learned various laboratory techniques and foundational genetics information, but taught future lab members the same topics. At Georgetown, I also spent two years working as a teaching assistant in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. There, I primarily ran the laboratory course, but also helped students develop scientific writing skills and interpret complex data. Finally, I served as a TA for two years in our first-year Anatomy and Physiology course. For this position, I hosted weekly review sessions for groups of 16 students, creating my own review slides and games.
In the humanities, I spent a year in Spain teaching English as a second language to elementary school students. At times, I ran the classroom setting. Other times, I worked one-on-one in small groups. As a bilingual Spanish speaker, I am also able to teach Spanish.
Finally, I am extensively involved in personal statement, essay writing, and interview prep for medical school. At Penn, I co-created a summer mentorship program for students applying, and have edited various essays. I received 12 interview invitations when I applied, and was accepted to four top schools. Overall, I am very well equipped to help students in a variety of subjects and applications to higher education. I look forward to working with you
