Bio

Hello! My name is Maggie, I’m a current second year medical student at the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. I took the MCAT once and scored in the 98th percentile, receiving a 521 out of 528. Through a self-study strategy revamp, I was able to raise my practice scores by 19 points over 2 months after a period of frustrating practice score plateaus, and scored right in my target range on test day. I believe everyone can improve their scores once they find the right study strategy, learn what the test is really asking, and make a feasible study plan--all things that I can help with!

I'm also well-equipped to help you at all other steps of your medical school application journey. When I was applying to medical school, I crafted thoughtful answers to essay and interview questions, and wove thematic threads from my personal statement into my whole application. I strongly believe that this continuity and ability to “tell a story” helped me stand out and succeed as an applicant. I had 5 interviews, 3 at top 10 schools, and was offered admissions to 2 of those top 10 schools. I would be happy to brainstorm essay ideas, edit, and share tips about what certain essay questions are truly asking, drawing from my application cycle and a Johns Hopkins secondary essay class. I can also offer mock interviews and interview prep advice based on my experience, and from insights I learned from interviewers on the Penn Med admissions committee.

For my undergraduate education, I attended Johns Hopkins University and received a BS in Molecular and Cellular Biology. I graduated with honors in Biology and also a minor in Music from the Peabody Institute. I have mentored and edited medical school applications for 2 people, both of whom are attending their top-choice medical school. I also tutored classmates in biology during college, and engage in peer-peer teaching at med school case presentations.

EMT/ NREMT

EMT/ NREMT

I was certified as an EMT-B in NY in 2021, after passing the NY State EMT exam with a 95% on the written exam and 100% on the practical exam. I have a robust clinical skills background, with the combination of my EMS and medical school experience. I also have developed strong study approaches and test-taking strategies for clinically focused exam, having prepared for the NYS EMT exam, the NREMT exam, and now medical school exams that synthesize medical knowledge with clinical action. I can share these skills with you to help you confidently pass your EMT certification exams!
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I am a current first year medical student at UPenn's Perelman School of Medicine who successfully navigated a challenging application and interview cycle that included writing over 85 secondary essays while I was also working. I am a strong writer and editor with experience in scientific, humanistic, and narrative writing that has given me the tools to express myself in a clear, compelling, and concise way, all of which are critical for writing answers to challenging secondary essay questions that have a strict, low character count. I took a Johns Hopkins secondary essay class that gave me great insights into secondary essay strategy, and I also developed several techniques to expand upon themes in my AMCAS and personal statement in my secondary essays to present a polished "story" that really emphasized who I was as an applicant and what makes me unique. I shared these insights with two students whom I coached through the application process, editing over 120 secondary essays, and helped them express themselves, their values, and their interests, all while integrating stories from their lives; I was thrilled to see their writing skills and confidence grow through this process, and to see them both accepted into their top choice medical school.
Genetics

Genetics

I am a first year medical student who has an in-depth knowledge of genetics from classroom, lab, and research experience. I took upper level classes in genetics (including genetic engineering and genetic technology), developmental genetics, genetic ethics, and a CRISPR-based developmental genetics lab at Johns Hopkins University. I have also taken a medical school course in genetics that integrates advanced genetic principles with clinical manifestations, diagnoses, treatment, and genetic counseling. I have experience teaching genetics concepts through peer-peer case based learning.
Interview Prep

Interview Prep

I am a current second year medical student at UPenn's Perelman School of Medicine who successfully navigated a challenging application and interview cycle: I did 5 interviews, including 3 with Ivy League schools, 2 of which are top 10 med schools. I prepared extensively through mock interviews, preparing for interview questions, and speaking with current students, all of which gave me interview strategies, insight, and confidence that I can share with prospective medical students. I privately coached two students through the application and interview process, both of whom received several interviews and were accepted into their top choice medical schools. Additionally, several of my colleagues are interviewers for the Penn Med admissions team, and conversations and workshops with them have given me great insight into what medical schools are looking for in an applicant, and what common communication strengths and weaknesses are for interviewees.
MCAT

MCAT

I took the MCAT in April 2023 and earned a score of 521 of 528, which was in the 98th percentile. I had a very even score distribution: 131 on Chem/Phys, 131 on CARS, 130 on Bio/Biochem, and 129 on Psych/Soc. I self-studied and was able to raise my practice scores from a 503 to a 522 in 2 months, using a variety of techniques focusing on content mastery, speed and accuracy, and learning how to approach questions and what the questions were truly asking. I have since privately tutored 2 other students who scored in the 515-520 range. I have experience tutoring students in biology classes and in medical school peer-peer case-based learning.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

I am a current second year medical student at UPenn's Perelman School of Medicine who successfully navigated a challenging application and interview cycle: I did 5 interviews, including 3 with Ivy League schools, 2 of which are top 10 med schools, and was frequently complimented on the clarity and compelling nature of my personal statement. I am a strong writer and editor with experience in scientific, humanistic, and narrative writing, all of which help me to be clear, concise, and tell a poignant story with a point, all of which lend themselves to personal statement writing. I enjoy editing and storytelling, and have experience helping people express themselves in writing: I privately coached two students through the med school application process, edited their personal statements, and worked closely with them to hone the statement in a way that amplified their voice and answered the prompt in an authentic way--both students wrote strong personal statements and were accepted into their top choice medical school. I have also attended a Johns Hopkins personal statement writing class that has helped me learn what common pitfalls to avoid in personal statements, how and when to "show not tell," how to clearly structure a personal statement, and what medical schools are looking for or not looking for in a personal statement.
