Hi, I’m Anna, a native Mandarin Chinese tutor based in Pennsylvania. I hold a Master’s degree in Economics and a Mandarin Proficiency Certificate, and I have been teaching Mandarin for over five years. Since 2021, I have worked with more than 100 students through one-on-one online lessons, teaching learners of different ages, backgrounds, and proficiency levels, from complete beginners to advanced students. I have helped students prepare for HSK and AP Chinese exams, as well as improve their Chinese for travel, business, and everyday communication.
My teaching approach is personalized, practical, and conversation-focused. I first learn about each student’s goals, interests, current level, and learning style, then design lessons around their specific needs. Depending on the student, lessons may include Pinyin and tone practice, pronunciation correction, sentence patterns, grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Rather than relying mainly on memorization, I help students use new language through realistic conversations, role-playing, situational practice, authentic articles and videos, and interactive activities. For students preparing for HSK or AP Chinese, I also provide structured practice and targeted test-taking strategies.
I believe learning Mandarin is also an opportunity to understand Chinese culture. I connect language lessons with traditional festivals, customs, history, and modern Chinese society and daily life, helping students understand not only what Chinese people say, but also how and why they communicate in different situations. In addition to teaching, I have professional experience as an English-Chinese translator and tax professional, which has strengthened my ability to communicate clearly, explain complex ideas patiently, and work with people from diverse backgrounds. My goal is to create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, building confidence, and making steady progress in Mandarin.
