For most of my life, friends and family have told me that I am quite good at explaining things, but it wasn’t until my first job as a Teachers Assistant in graduate school that I really understood what they meant. For most of my life, friends and family have told me that I am quite good at explaining things, but it wasn’t until my first job as a Teachers Assistant in graduate school that I really understood what they meant. I have spent the last 10+ years working as a biologist obtaining both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in marine biology and have worked in seven labs. In each step along the way, I have always found the most satisfaction in teaching/training positions. In each lab I have worked in, I tend to take on the training role, because I was always quite good at remembering what it was like when I first started. Being able to point out commonly made mistakes before the occur and help new employees get on their feet was always rewarding to me. When I was getting my master’s degree, I taught three different courses as a TA, and absolutely loved the feeling of a class full of students coming to an understanding of the subject matter.
My teaching experience is mainly in biology, biochemistry, and biostatistics. Additionally, I have spent a majority of my professional career in the field of genetics, so I have a very robust understanding of molecular biology. The classes I was a TA for in graduate school were roughly 10-30 students per section and I taught 6 groups in total over the course of a year. More recently, I spent the last two summers mentoring a high school student in my UPenn Genetics Diagnostics lab and found that I was able to successfully connect with him and it gave me a lot of joy to teach him everything I had learned about lab work over the last 10+ years of my life.
I think my main strength as a teacher is to be able to effectively put myself in the student’s shoes to remember what it was like to approach a new subject without all the context that comes only after you fully understand it. In my course reviews, 100% of my students said they would recommend me as a TA and 21 nominated me for a Teaching Excellence Award. I look forward to continuing my journey as an educator!

Approved Subjects

Biochemistry

Biochemistry

In graduate school, I was a TA for a marine biochemistry course so I am very familiar with the common issues that students typically have in trying to understand the complexities of biochemistry. I have also worked for nearly 10 years in different bio labs that require specific knowledge of biochemical pathways to best understand the research.
Biology

Biology

I have worked in biology labs and studied biology since I was 16 years old. While most of my experience is in the field of Marine Biology, I am very knowledgeable about all biological systems both marine and terrestrial. I have an expertise in genetics, and have a passion for population ecology, but my knowledge spans a majority of biological fields. I have published papers on research topics such as immune systems, pigmentation, mitochondrial efficiency, and population genetics.
Biostatistics

Biostatistics

I have taken one introductory and one advanced course in Biostatistics in graduate school. Additionally, I used R studio for my thesis defense and for projects in at least 3 graduate classes. I continue to use R studio to do biostatistics in a laboratory setting.
Ecology

Ecology

I have been passionate about earth sciences my entire life and thoroughly enjoy passing on my knowledge to the next generation. Biology and Ecology were the main focus of my master's education and I have a history of teaching marine ecology to college students as a Teachers Assistant.
Genetics

Genetics

Genetics has been the focus of my work since my sophomore year of undergrad. A majority of the research positions I held at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) involved projects that used genetic barcoding to categorize California Coastal Fish species. My Masters thesis focused on how intraspecific genetic variation leads to mitochondrial fitness, and the last two jobs I have held (2020-2024) were in genetic testing laboratories, so I am very familiar with all the ins and outs of genetics.
Zoology

Zoology

I have completed a Bachelors and Masters degree in Marine biology, while taking courses in all forms of terrestrial and aquatic biology. I have become familiar with zoology through the study of ecology, taxonomy, morphology, developmental biology, and systems biology in each class that I took. My Masters thesis focused on a marine crustacean and a majority of the research revolved around the sexual dimorphism of the species as well as it's locomotion, which determines it's evolutionary advantages and disadvantages.

Well prepared and very patient!

I am really bad at coding, but Lucas was able to help me understand a lot of the minor details for making models for population ecology. He came to the lesson very well prepared with notes and questions for me to help me along my assignments. Very patient when I didn't understand a concept and was able to answer all my questions!
