I am a professional journalist turned teacher.
I first fell in love with the craft of writing as an undergraduate at Washington University in St. Louis, where I studied creative writing and American history. I then became a journalist, traveling across the country and covering everything from city government to arts and entertainment. I won multiple regional and national awards, including the best national feature by the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies for an immersive, in-depth story I wrote on a Sudanese refugee killed by St. Louis police.
While working as a journalist, I tutored students, coached basketball, and decided to become a teacher. I want to share my joy for writing and reading with students. After leaving jouranlism, I have earned a master's degree in education from the University of Penn as part of the Urban Teaching Apprenticeship Program. During the year, I served as a student teacher in a 7th and 11th grade classroom.
I have a wide range of teaching experience. I have taught theme statements to 7th graders and provided feedback on history essays by college students. I know what it takes to become a successful writer. I want to help students through the writing process –– to help them untangle complicated concepts, organize an essay structure, hone a punchy argument, and unearth ideas that they never knew existed. I believe in putting students in the driver's seat while guiding them where they want their essays to go. Most importantly, I believe in leading with compassion and empathy, and infusing students with confidence.
I am best suited to help middle school, high school, and college students with analytical essays, creative writing assignments, college essays, personal writing projects, applications, and cover letters. I can also help with test preparation for writing and reading subjects.
In my free time, I coach basketball, binge The Wire, watch Philadelphia sports, and hang out with my cat, Rocky.
