Hi! I’m Justin, a University of Pennsylvania graduate with a B.A. in Economics and a minor in Data Science & Analytics. I enjoy helping students make challenging material more manageable while building their knowledge and confidence.

I have one-on-one tutoring experience with elementary, middle, and high school students in the United States and Ireland. I tutor math from elementary topics through calculus, as well as SAT Math and Reading, homework, exam preparation, and foundational skills. I tailor each lesson to the student’s coursework and areas of difficulty.

My teaching approach is patient, structured, and focused on understanding rather than memorization. I break problems into clear steps, explain the reasoning behind each method, and use guided practice to help students become more independent.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I am a University of Pennsylvania graduate with a B.A. in Economics and a minor in Data Science & Analytics, with experience tutoring middle and secondary school students in mathematics. I help Algebra 1 students build confidence with equations, inequalities, graphing, functions, exponents, factoring, and word problems by breaking difficult concepts into manageable steps. My one-on-one tutoring experience includes helping students strengthen foundational skills, review school material, prepare for exams, and practice applying concepts to unfamiliar problems. I adapt lessons to each student's needs and focus on helping students understand why a method works rather than simply memorizing steps.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I am a University of Pennsylvania graduate with a B.A. in Economics and a minor in Data Science & Analytics, with experience tutoring secondary school students in mathematics. I help Algebra 2 students work through topics including functions, quadratic equations, polynomials, rational expressions, exponentials, logarithms, systems of equations, and complex numbers. My approach is to break multi-step problems into manageable pieces while helping students understand the reasoning behind each step rather than relying only on memorized formulas. I can support students with strengthening foundational skills, reviewing class material, working through challenging problems, and preparing for quizzes and exams.
Calculus

Calculus

I am a University of Pennsylvania graduate who earned a 5 on both the AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC exams. I help students understand limits, derivatives, integrals, applications of differentiation and integration, sequences and series, and other core AB and BC Calculus topics. My approach breaks challenging problems into manageable steps while emphasizing the intuition behind each concept rather than relying solely on memorized formulas. I can help students strengthen prerequisite skills, work through course material and practice problems, and prepare for calculus exams.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I am a University of Pennsylvania graduate with a B.A. in Economics and a minor in Data Science & Analytics, with experience providing one-on-one math tutoring to elementary and middle school students. I help younger students strengthen skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, place value, fractions, decimals, word problems, and other foundational math concepts. I adapt lessons to each student's level and use step-by-step explanations, practice problems, and interactive activities to keep younger learners engaged while identifying gaps in their understanding. My goal is to help students understand why a method works, build a strong mathematical foundation, and become more comfortable solving problems independently.
Geometry

Geometry

I am a University of Pennsylvania graduate and have passed Wyzant's Geometry proficiency test. I tutor students in geometry topics including angles, triangles, polygons, similarity and congruence, coordinate geometry, area, surface area, volume, and the Pythagorean theorem. I break problems into clear, manageable steps and focus on helping students understand the reasoning behind formulas rather than simply memorizing them. I can also provide targeted practice for homework, quizzes, tests, and review of topics where a student needs additional support.
Korean

Korean

I am a fluent Korean speaker with extensive experience using Korean both academically and in everyday life. I spent a year studying at Yonsei University in Seoul and completed Korean-language programs through both Yonsei University's Korean Language Institute and Sogang University's Korean Language Education Center. I regularly spend time in Korea, where my parents live, and am comfortable with both conversational Korean and the cultural context behind how the language is actually used. I can help students with Hangul, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, conversation, and developing greater confidence communicating naturally in Korean.
Literature

Literature

I am a University of Pennsylvania graduate with a B.A. in Economics and a minor in Data Science & Analytics, with academic and research experience analyzing complex texts and developing evidence-based interpretations. Through my work with Penn’s Price Lab for Digital Humanities, I have worked extensively with literary research data involving thousands of authors and works across editions of the Norton Anthology. I help students strengthen close reading, identify themes and literary devices, analyze characters and arguments, and support interpretations with evidence from the text. My approach focuses on helping students understand how to arrive at an interpretation themselves rather than simply providing an answer.
PSAT

PSAT

I am a University of Pennsylvania graduate with a B.A. in Economics and a minor in Data Science & Analytics, and I scored a 1570 on the SAT (790 Math, 780 Reading and Writing) as well as an 800 on the SAT Math Level 2 Subject Test. I currently tutor students in SAT and PSAT Math and Reading/Writing, helping them identify recurring weaknesses, understand why they miss questions, and develop strategies for unfamiliar problems. Because I raised my own SAT score from a 1400 to a 1570, I understand how targeted practice, careful error review, and stronger test-taking strategies can translate into substantial improvement. My lessons are individualized around each student's performance, with an emphasis on building the underlying skills, accuracy, pacing, and confidence needed for PSAT success.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I am a University of Pennsylvania graduate with a B.A. in Economics and a minor in Data Science & Analytics, with experience tutoring secondary school students in math and working through SAT-style problems. I help students strengthen the algebra, functions, geometry, statistics, and problem-solving skills tested on SAT Math while identifying foundational gaps that may be holding them back. My approach combines targeted practice with step-by-step explanations, teaching students how to recognize what a question is asking, choose an efficient strategy, and avoid common mistakes. I also use practice questions to identify recurring weaknesses so that lessons can focus on the areas where a student has the greatest opportunity to improve.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I am a University of Pennsylvania graduate with a B.A. in Economics and a minor in Data Science & Analytics, with extensive academic experience analyzing complex texts and evaluating evidence. I help students approach SAT Reading questions by identifying main ideas, interpreting words in context, making evidence-supported inferences, and distinguishing strong answers from tempting but unsupported choices. My approach emphasizes understanding exactly what a question is asking and returning to specific evidence in the passage rather than relying on intuition alone. I also help students recognize recurring mistakes and develop a more systematic, efficient approach to unfamiliar passages.
United States History

United States History

I am a University of Pennsylvania graduate who earned a 5 on the AP U.S. History exam and have a strong foundation in U.S. history from the colonial period through the modern era. I can help students understand major historical events, political and economic developments, cause-and-effect relationships, and connections across different periods of American history. For APUSH students, I can also help with analyzing primary and secondary sources, building evidence-based historical arguments, and approaching multiple-choice and written-response questions. My approach focuses on helping students understand the larger historical story and relationships between events rather than relying only on memorization.
