I have a Ph.D. in biology and more than 25 years of experience teaching biology at the college level. I have taught introductory biology for majors and nonmajors, ecology, evolution, animal behavior, environmental science, conservation biology, and other upper-level biology courses. I have worked with students preparing for careers in medicine, research, environmental science, and other STEM fields, helping them build both a strong conceptual understanding and the problem-solving skills needed for success. Throughout my career, I have also mentored undergraduate researchers and advised students as they navigated challenging coursework and planned for graduate and professional school.

My teaching philosophy is centered on helping students truly understand biology rather than simply memorize facts. I know that many students struggle with topics such as cellular respiration, photosynthesis, genetics, evolution, and experimental design because they seem like disconnected pieces of information. I enjoy breaking complex concepts into manageable steps, using diagrams, real-world examples, and questions that encourage students to think like scientists. I adapt each session to the student's learning style and goals, whether they need help preparing for an exam, completing assignments, mastering difficult concepts, or building confidence in the subject.

In addition to classroom teaching, I have many years of experience working one-on-one with students through office hours, academic mentoring, and undergraduate research supervision. I have taught students with a wide range of backgrounds and abilities, from first-year college students taking their first biology course to advanced biology majors. My goal is to create a supportive, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, developing their understanding, and gaining the confidence to succeed independently.

Approved Subjects

Biology

Biology

I have a Ph.D. in biology and more than 25 years of experience teaching college biology, from introductory courses for majors to upper-level classes in ecology, evolution, animal behavior, and conservation biology. I specialize in helping students understand challenging concepts by breaking them into manageable steps and connecting them to real-world examples. Whether you're preparing for an exam, working through difficult assignments, or building a stronger foundation for future science courses, I will tailor each session to your goals and learning style. My aim is not only to help you succeed in your current course but also to develop the confidence and critical thinking skills that will serve you throughout your studies.
Ecology

Ecology

I have more than 25 years of experience teaching ecology at the college level, helping students understand how organisms interact with one another and with their environment across multiple levels of biological organization. My teaching emphasizes ecological principles such as population dynamics, community interactions, ecosystems, biodiversity, and conservation while connecting these concepts to current environmental challenges. I enjoy helping students think critically about ecological data, experimental design, and the application of scientific evidence to real-world problems. My goal is to build both a strong conceptual foundation and the analytical skills students need to succeed in ecology coursework.
Environmental Science

Environmental Science

I have more than 20 years of experience teaching environmental science and related subjects at the college level. I developed an Environmental Science major and an Environmental Studies minor and have taught courses covering ecology, conservation biology, climate change, sustainability, and human impacts on the environment. My approach emphasizes understanding the scientific principles behind environmental issues while helping students analyze real-world problems and evaluate evidence-based solutions. I enjoy helping students connect concepts across biology, ecology, chemistry, and earth science to build a deeper understanding of environmental systems.
Zoology

Zoology

I have more than 20 years of experience teaching zoology and animal biology at the college level. My teaching has included animal behavior, ecology, evolution, biodiversity, and introductory biology, giving me a broad foundation in the diversity, structure, function, and evolution of animals. I help students move beyond memorization by connecting anatomical and physiological concepts to evolutionary adaptations and ecological relationships. My goal is to help students develop a deep understanding of animal biology while building the analytical skills needed to succeed in their coursework.
