Hi, I'm Jaan! I'm interested in tutoring motivated students in organic chemistry. My background is that I graduated magna cum laude in chemistry and then earned my Ph.D in organic chemistry at Columbia University. After two years of a post-doctoral appointment in organic chemistry at UC Berkeley, I worked for 30 years as a pharmaceutical chemist at Dupont and Bristol Myers-Squibb. During that time, I was Associate Editor of an American Chemical Society journal and co-founded a chemical conference in the Baltics that has been going on since 2000. I've been intimately involved with organic chemistry all my life. While at Columbia, I had a good experience as a teaching assistant and would like to leverage that to tutoring students in organic chemistry.
I've always had an interest in teaching. From my teaching assistant days to working with summer students while in industry to my experience as Associate Editor dealing with authors, I always found it rewarding when my students were able to 'get it.'
I wish to benefit the student as much as possible - I consider it a failure should the concepts I try to get across, fail to click. Fortunately, this has rarely been the case. I'm interested in input from parents and guardians as well since successful teaching is a collaborative experience. Anything the parent can add to our experience can only help in a rewarding endeavor. As I am retired, I am available almost any time and promise fast responses. Please contact me with any other questions.
