Hi! I'm Kristina. I'm a high school graduate who took mostly Advanced Placement, Gifted and Talented, and Honors courses. I have a little over one year of experience homeschooling 2 young children between 8 and 10 in American history, government, and reading and writing. Their favorite project I assigned them was a mock presidential election where they created their own presidential campaign; campaign advertisement; brainstormed how they'd fix problems they experienced in their home, like people entering others' bedrooms without permission; wrote and performed speeches; and did a simplified presidential debate with planned questions.

Throughout my years in school, I joined any writing group I could find. I've drafted novels which, although not yet published, have gotten amazing reviews from friends and strangers alike upon reading excerpts. I am extremely passionate about writing and science especially, and I hope to pursue a related field in the future. In the meantime, my goal is to pass my knowledge onto children in a way that is fun enough to be engaging and interesting, and yet still focused on the topic at hand.

After graduating high school, I realized that my passion in many subjects wasn't something that I had from the start. In fact, I was one of the kids who would daydream in any class that wasn't music or art, and I'd only really be excited to go to school if I had one of the aforementioned classes that day or because of recess. Then, I met my fifth grade history and writing teacher. He would make games out of lessons, such as letting us crumple up paper and throw it at eachother to show us how fair or unfair some civil war battles were; he'd read our assigned books aloud with us in such a theatrical way that it kept everyone engaged; and if the class got good grades on a test, he'd reward us. That teacher ignited my love of reading and writing and opened the doors for me to find passion in other topics, and I hope to emanate that so that the younger generations can find their passion, too.

American History

American History

I have homeschooled two elementary-aged children in American History for over a year now. We started with the specific differences between Native Americans in different parts of the country and hopw they lived their day-to-day life. We then moved to the founding of the American colonies and the colonists' interactions with the Native Americans, as well as the reasons for Columbus's voyage, the benefits it brought to Europe, and the disadvantages it brought to the Native Americans. We utilized the website iCivics to keep the kids engaged in the creation of the US government, and once we had our unit on modern US government structures, I created a few projects for them, including an interactive game that showed why the Articles of Confederation didn't work, a mock Presidential race, a mock Congress, a lawmaking project, and a mock trial, all adjusted to be more engaging and easier for the students to understand at their age. For example, I gave them the option to use issues they experienced in their day-to-day lives in their projects instead of bigger, real-world problems. One of them focused on their siblings entering their bedroom without permission, and another focused on people stealing eachother's snacks. Currently, we're taking a temporary break from US history to go over when each of the US states was founded, where they're located, and some fun facts about them. This will eventually lead to a state diorama project where they choose a state and make a diorama focused on either a landmark the state is known for or an important historical event, and it'll also have to include either the state animal or the state plant along with some other fun facts.

Flute

I started playing the flute in 4th grade and continued up until I graduated high school. I played in concert bands and marching bands alike, and I was often asked to play at small local events at churches and such.
