My name is Stephen and I am a passionate music composer and arranger. I graduated from the Mason Gross School of the Arts with my bachelor’s degree in jazz performance and an honors college certificate, having completed a 40-page thesis paper on Jazz Composition. I made Dean’s list every semester and graduated with highest honors, Summa Cum Laude.

Most recently, I've been writing music for video games, film, and other media. I have some projects in the works, but will share publicly when I can.

I have had the privilege to attend the Boysie Lowery Living Jazz Residency of 2021 & 2022, a by-audition-only musical residency for jazz composers and performers. This all-expenses paid, highly-competitive, residency provided free jazz composition lessons, masterclasses, ensemble rehearsals, listening sessions, and jam sessions. The whole experience culminated in a performance at the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival. There, I had the opportunity to perform my compositions with other members of the residency to a crowd of hundreds of people!

Another favorite musical experience of mine was in 2019, when I was back with the Play, on Philly! summer program. There, I taught a 5 week high school music composition course that ended with an opportunity for the students to have their compositions workshopped and recorded in a studio by a professional group, Orchestra 2001.

I don't use a set curriculum because every student is unique. I pride myself in building lessons and assignments that cater to the specific student’s strengths and weaknesses. Also, I am incredibly fast at transcription (taking audio and turning it into sheet music). In the past I have transcribed and arranged music from Star Wars, Steven Universe, Pink Floyd, Camila Cabello, The Beatles, Billie Eilish, The Doors, and many more for my students.

Please ask me for examples of my compositions – One of my greatest strengths is my actual work as a music composer.

Professional and to the point

My 11 year old daughter had her first lesson with Stephen the other day, she was really nervous but liked him a lot. First off, Stephen has a calm presence and he was very patient with her. He was able to establish trust right away and not make her feel intimidated. Within minutes he deciphered what was wrong with her air flow and which skills she should be focused on (since Covid she has been trying to play without guidance from the school, we have just muddled through the best we could). Thanks to Stephen she now has a renewed interest and is looking forward to her next lessons.

Happy!

My children have been taking piano lessons with Stephen and are doing very well so far. Stephen is very knowledgeable, well organized and prepared and provides very structured lessons. The kids practice multiple times between lessons and I am enjoying their progress. I highly recommend Stephen.

Encouraging and patient

Stephen is helping my 7th grader to get back on track. Last school year was my son’s first year playing the saxophone, and this year’s Covid homeschooling has really thrown a glitch in his progress. Stephen is so kind and encouraging and is helping him refocus. It’s great to hear the sounds of practice again. Thanks Stephen!
