I trained as an elementary school music teacher in England and taught in both public and private schools before moving to the US. Finding I couldn't teach in the US with British qualifications, I ran several Girl Scout Troops, and then moved into teaching music within a choral music program. As part of my job I had to promote concerts, and found that I loved graphic design, and wanted to learn more.

After raising my children I was able to go grad school in 2004, and alongside courses in visual communications, took extra courses in graphic and web design, and since graduating from Penn have been running my own freelance graphic design business. In addition to creating print materials for non-profit groups and creating over 100 websites, I have moved into collaborative web design projects, working directly with my clients. I found this to be very helpful, as in talking as I work, I have gained a great deal of insight into the ways people think about the design process and have learned ways of explaining how to do things and make things work without using overly technical vocabulary.

Added to all this is the British accent and dry sense of humour, so learning is accompanied by a sense of fun.

Adobe InDesign,

Adobe InDesign

I initially learned InDesign at the University of Pennsylvania in 2004, and have been using it daily ever since. I have taken a few Udemy courses to deepen my knowledge, but feel sure that after 15 years of use and having worked from CS2 up to the current Creative Cloud version, my understanding is pretty comprehensive.

Graphic Design

When I returned to graduate school in 2004, I opted to take extra classes in Graphic Design. In the process I took classes in design theory, color theory, font design, typography, and the use of Adobe software including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. This training, along with 10 years of daily practice gives me a strong practical as well as theoretical knowledge of the aspects of graphic design.

Web Design

Web Design

At Penn I took a class in Dreamweaver web design, and learned the theory of good webdesign. When I tried to create sites for clients, Dreamweaver proved to be too complicated for easy changes to be made to the site. As a more workable alternative, I learned WordPress and have since built over 100 sites, and have helped many clients maintain and update their own sites.

Addressed all of my questions. Very knowledgeable.

I told Gillian I needed more direction than tutoring and it worked for me. Up until now, I would run into issues trying to format my WordPress site/pages. With her direction, I was able to address all of my issues. I found her style very acceptable for me and we have planned another session soon. Highly recommended.

An excellent service provider

A smart woman with a great ability to guide the user especially one as inexperienced as me. She works fast but is exceptionally clear navigating as the user does the driving. My wish is to establish a long term engagement with Gillian for the curation of my wordpress commerce endeavor.

Knowledgable and fun instructor

Gillian helped answer most of my basic WordPress questions and gave some great advice on the current "trends" of blog sites. I really enjoyed my time with her and will certainly contact her again if I need more training.

Patient and kind

I needed some help learning WordPress to build a simple website. In 3 separate one-hour sessions I learned enough from Gillian to create a great-looking site complete with personalized headers and footers, menu bar, sub-pages, and links. She was kind enough to send me follow-up information to solve issues we were not able to solve during our sessions. And she was very positive and supportive. Highly recommend!
