ADHD

ADHD

I am a Special Education teacher, with over 20 years of experience with special needs students. I hold a Master's degree in Special Education and also teach a Special Education course in a teacher prep program at a university. I have worked with many students with ADD/ADHD.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have been teaching special education for over 20 years. I have worked with students with Autism on all parts of the spectrum. I am very familiar with their needs. Students with autism need routine and familiarity. They are visual and concrete learners, so they need pictures and hands on activities. They have difficulty generalizing concepts, so they need practice in many different settings. They need to feel comfortable with people in order to work with them. They struggle with social and interpersonal skills, so they often need help in these areas as well. I hold a master's degree in special education. I am an adjunct professor of special education at Rutger's University. I have done extensive research into autism and how to work with students with this condition. I understand their needs and behaviors. I have the experience, skills, and knowledge to work with these students. I can teach them the academics that they need in a visual, hands on way. I can deal with their behaviors calmly and easily, so as to not accelerate any behavior problems. I understand their social skill deficits, so I have techniques to help them understand subtle cues. I can rephrase questions that are difficult in a way that helps them relate to the topics.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I am a special education teacher. I have been teaching students with all types of learning disabilities for many years. Students with dyslexia need reinforcement of sound-letter patterns and combinations. They often have strong comprehension skills, so context clues are a strong strategy for determining unknown words. They also struggle with spelling. When teaching these students, it is important to use positive reinforcement and encouragement, in order to keep them motivated.
Praxis

Praxis

I have passed three PRAXIS II tests: Elementary Content knowledge, High School English, and High School Math. I received a certificate of recognition for passing the Elementary Content test in the top 15% of test takers.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I have been teaching special needs students for over 20 years. I have worked with students with all types of disabilities in all types of settings. I have worked with students in residential, self contained, and inclusion settings. I have worked with students with learning disabilities, healh impairments, emotional disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and autism. I have used many different teaching strategies and can target strategies to meet individual needs.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have been teaching students with all types of disabilities for over 20 years. A large part of working with students with special needs is teaching study skills. It is important to emphasize organizational techniques for studying. It is also important to understand a particular student's learning style. No two students are alike, and what works for one will not necessarily work for others. For study skills, organization and an understanding of how the student learns are the most important pieces. I can evaluate a student's learning style and work with the student to create a learning and study plan that will meet his or her individual needs.

Great first experience with a tutor

Not only did Donna make an appointment with my daughter right way, she was fabulous. She was extremely knowledgeable and offered helpful tips to help alleviate the stress level of my daughter. She was patient, friendly, and thorough. I would highly recommend Donna to anyone who is looking for a tutor.

Donna is the best tutor we could have hoped for!

Donna is clearly an expert tutor and we feel lucky to have found her. She has a great deal of experience and is effective, supportive and warm. Donna gives helpful advice regarding the need for medical and other testing accommodations. She is currently helping my daughter prepare for the GED. After that is complete, we plan to continue the tutoring to prepare for the SAT.

Patient and adaptable tutor

Donna has been working with my 6th grader on Language Arts and Math. Donna is very flexible in her teaching approach; she easily adapts her lesson plan to address concepts that are being taught in school, and is able transition back to her planned lesson. Great job.

Knows how to work together and is patient

SAT help, especially with the math portion, and Donna is very knowledgeable at picking up where the gaps are with the student and concentrating on them. Very, accommodating with times and communication for sessions.

Knowledgeable and Patient

This was my son’s first tutoring lesson ever. He wasn’t sure what to expect and was anxious. Donna made him comfortable and patiently explained how he would benefit from the time. He got it. It was a relief to see. He’s ADHD and is struggling with his first year in middle school.
