I served as the math chairperson of my elementary school's math committee and am familiar with math standards at each grade level. In addition, I have taught many students at the elementary level to read and write through the use of a phonics-based curriculum. At the college- and adult levels, I have assisted students with college essays and research papers, and I have helped English Language Learners develop more skills in the English language. I love to help students grasp concepts that were once challenging to them!

I offer a complimentary first session to get to know the student, assess strengths and weaknesses, and to suggest a general plan for improvement. I assign weekly practice, homework, reading, and/or learning activities and games.

I completed four math in-service workshops to become familiar with the Common Core State Standards. I wrote a research paper on the new CCSS for a post-graduate class. As the math committee chairperson at my school, I participated on a committee to compare the CCSS to our school's current standards and made recommendations for improvement. As a teacher, I included CCSS in unit plans.

I have 11 years of classroom experience teaching 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade math. I am currently tutoring students in 4th and 5th grade math concepts- including math facts, long division, fractions, measurement conversions, and more! I was my elementary school's math committee chairperson for 5 years and led my school through the transition to the Common Core State standards and the implementation of a new math textbook series. In addition, I conducted research on current trends in mathematical education during my graduate studies.

As a high school and college student, I participated in PMEA District and Regional Band and Orchestras, College Touring Orchestra, and various pit orchestras. I was required to become familiar with and complete a practice book on D'Nealian handwriting during my studies for my B.S. in Elementary Education. Over the course of 11 years as a teacher, I have taught the Modern Handwriting method and Zaner Bloser Cursive Handwriting method. I have instructed students on how to hold a pencil correctly and am familiar with pencil grip aids to facilitate proper grasp of the pencil.

I encouraged students to apply phonics concepts through the use of "Word Work" activities in the Daily 5 center rotations. At the upper-grade levels, I have experience utilizing the Word Journeys program small-group learning.

As a fourth grade teacher, I instructed students in various ways to prepare for a test. This included showing students how to make flash cards, giving them time to practice with partners, and teaching them how to take notes from sources. As a tutor, I teach students how to break material down into smaller chunks, utilize pre-and post-reading strategies to locate main ideas, and organize their time to focus on several brief study sessions instead of one large session.

I utilized the Writer's Workshop method and walked students through the steps of prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Deborah has truly changed my granddaughter's life. It's so wonderful to see this little girls face when she is finished her sessions. Besides helping with her math, she has helped with her feeling so much better knowing just what she can accomplish.I can't say enough about Miss Deborah.

Help for timing with piano music

She has been helping me with the timing on my piano music. She is very kind and patient with me. She has a very pleasant personalitly and she understands what I am looking for in my need of being tutored. I believe I will have more confidence in my music playing because her music skills.
