I am a certified elementary teacher and have 11 years of teaching experience at the 1st through 4th grade levels. I also have 6 years experience teaching private music lessons. I minored in music in college (piano & flute) and have played in a variety of musical ensembles and as a soloist.
My tutoring style includes a well-organized and engaging plan of study tailored to the needs of the individual student. To accomplish this, I administer brief, informal assessments that highlight student strengths and weaknesses. I served as the math chairperson of my elementary school's math committee and am familiar with standards at each grade level. I have taught many students to read and write through the use of a phonics-based curriculum. I love to help students grasp concepts that were once challenging to them!
I offer piano lessons for beginners by utilizing Alfred's Basic Piano Library Series. I also offer flute lessons, beginner to advanced, by utilizing the Hal Leonard Rubank Series.
I offer a complimentary first session to get to know the student, assess strengths and weaknesses, and to suggest a general plan for improvement. I assign weekly practice, homework, reading, and/or learning activities and games.
My base rate is $40 an hour for in-person lessons. Music lessons are generally $20 per half hour.

Deborah has truly changed my granddaughter's life. It's so wonderful to see this little girls face when she is finished her sessions. Besides helping with her math, she has helped with her feeling so much better knowing just what she can accomplish.I can't say enough about Miss Deborah.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I completed four math in-service workshops to become familiar with the Common Core State Standards. I wrote a research paper on the new CCSS for a post-graduate class. As the math committee chairperson at my school, I participated on a committee to compare the CCSS to our school's current standards and made recommendations for improvement. As a teacher, I included CCSS in unit plans.

As a fourth grade teacher, I instructed students in various ways to prepare for a test. This included showing students how to make flash cards, giving them time to practice with partners, and teaching them how to take notes from sources. As a tutor, I teach students how to break material down into smaller chunks, utilize pre-and post-reading strategies to locate main ideas, and organize their time to focus on several brief study sessions instead of one large session.
