Hey there! I'm Alexia Sullivan, a mathematics connoisseur, an avid essay writer, and a teacher by day. I went to the University of Massachusetts Amherst in Boston, MA. In my free time I enjoy writing and publishing personal essays, helping up-and-coming college students with admissions, and creating mathematics and ELA lesson plans for the elementary through college level.

For the past six years, I have been privileged to work with a diverse range of students through the nonprofit Plexuss Foundation as well as fulfilling the role of lead teacher in an in-person, international school setting. My tutoring journey spans a wide spectrum, guiding students all the way through university-level. I am certified to teach a variety of subjects including Mathematics through Algebra 1, Reading Comprehension, Essay Writing, Grammar, and Study Skills. Additionally, my proficiency extends to Computer Skills, Arabic, specialized SAT/ACT English and Writing preparation, and state testing preparation. I have had great success in delivering personalized, interactive lesson plans that pinpoint and address gaps in students' understanding.

Regarding my method of teaching, I understand that each student learns differently. Some excel with traditional methods like textbooks and homework, while others thrive with interactive approaches such as games and videos. Recognizing this diversity, I am flexible in my teaching style, tailoring lessons to meet the unique needs of each student.

I have been pursuing Arabic for over 10 years, including online courses, in-person college courses, one-on-one tutors, textbook style learning, and moving to the Middle East directly for language immersion. After gaining fluency in the Egyptian dialect, I am aware of how to address the specific needs of English speakers when trying to learn Arabic when it comes to pronunciation, grammar, and cultural understanding. As a tutor, I am aware of how to identify student learning styles and how to utilize various materials and resources for language-learning.

I have worked for three and a half years as a k-6 tutor, bringing under-performing students up to grade level. As a tutor I have helped students in phonics and spelling, paragraph writing, reading comprehension, and grammar with great success. I also have tutored in math and taught basic addition all the way to pre-algebra.

I have worked for the past five years for a non-profit wherein I help underperforming students meet grade-level standards. One of the things I work with students K-8 on is math skills needed for state testing and success in the classroom. My approach is a comprehension based approach- I don't aim for students simply to memorize, but rather to be able to comprehend, critically think, and apply skills in real-life scenarios.

I have worked as a student at the IT desk at the University of Massachusetts Amherst setting up, troubleshooting, and fixing issues on MacBooks, as this is the primary device students use. MacBooks and iMacs have been the sole devices I've used throughout my time at university until today, and I have become an expert in their functions and navigations. I've helped a number of students here on Wyzant with navigating and troubleshooting their MacBooks with great success.
