In my tutoring I focus on the goals of the individual. I love working with students of any age--my youngest was 3 years old and my oldest was 75 years old--and I take great joy in seeing my students successfully master a subject, concept, or idea to move them forward and enhance their learning. After performing a diagnostic test on each of my students, I create an individualized plan of action that focuses on the concepts that the student has yet to master. For example, if a student has mastered the grammar and vocabulary concepts, I build on those to improve their skills in reading for context and paragraph organization. This helps bring those concepts to life for the student. I use The Kaplan Premier ACT Prep book which gives detailed explanations of all problems, contains 6 practice tests, and takes the student through a step by step common sense methodology to master test concepts.

My ACT Mathematics approach is quite similar to the rest of my ACT preparation methods. I work with the students through all of the topics covered in the ACT math section including: pre-algebra, elementary and intermediate algebra, plane geometry, coordinate geometry, and basic trigonometry. I build on whatever my students know in order to help them learn the concepts that are less familiar to them so that it is a concept to concept approach. My goal is to help them feel empowered and confident on test day.

I approach the ACT Science portion of the exam in much the same manner as the rest of the exam. I cover all of the most frequently tested concepts, and then move into the advanced concepts so that my students are thoroughly prepared for the exam. Since each of the sections is based on a given reading, rather than on prior knowledge, the preparation is very comprehensive. I help students understand how to approach each question type, and give them tips and tricks for using process of elimination and common sense in order to narrow the choices.

I was fortunate to have two of the most wonderful Algebra tutors in the world...my mom and dad. They both loved math and helped me to understands the concepts. American History

I developed a great love for American History from my Pap, a World War II Navy Veteran. He had always been something of history "buff," and he always talked to us about history as if it were "story time." As I grew older I started to delve deeper into American History, researching battles, historical events and places, and becoming an avid History Channel viewer. There is so much to learn and find out about. I know that I could help you research about a project, analyze the reasons why different events occurred, and help American History come to life for you, the way my Pap brought it to life for me!

I have a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Seton Hill University. I've been playing clarinet since 1988, and play it professionally all over the Pittsburgh area. I've been teaching clarinet privately for over 10 years, teaching instrumental music in the public schools for 7 years, and work with instrumental students from 4th grade to 75 years old. I tailor my lesson instruction to student's individual goals so they are excited about learning, and can move forward rapidly to achieve the goals they've set. Whether they want to participate in honors bands, attain a certain chair in their school ensemble, or play at their church on Sunday, I design a program of study to assist in getting those goals accomplished!

I've been working with children grades K-6 for move than 15 years. My experience started in college when I worked in a daycare setting helping the after-school students get homework completed prior to parent pick-up. I continued this assistance through my professional teaching career by helping students in need of assistance in any subject area. I focused on honing this skill while teaching Gifted education, and helped several students have noticeable "break-throughs" in elementary math, English, social studies, and science. Additionally, I assisted them in developing study habits that would continue to help them as they continued through their education. As a teacher who is certified K-12, I understand the development of young children. I am excellent at breaking difficult subjects into small manageable "bites," and I am patient and kind. I know how to help students break through whatever frustration or mental block they may have to achieve true understanding. I enjoy seeing that moment where ideas click and all of a sudden the subject becomes easy!

Math can be fun and exciting if taught in a way that's applicable to the student! I work to bring math to life in a way that makes sense to a student. I like to keep the environment positive and upbeat, and my goal is to make math something they understand as useful for how they'll live their lives in the future. If your child is a sports fan, then we'll use sports analogies, and if he/she's a musician I'll explain how math is musical. The key is to find the student's area of interest and show them how math works with it!

I hold a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Seton Hill University in Greensburg, PA. Since then, I have been teaching elementary through high school band and teaching both woodwinds and brass privately for more than 10 years. My private flute students have advanced to honors bands both at the middle and high school level, and have been graced with leadership roles such as section captain/leader, 1st chair placement, as well as the honor of being the piccolo player for the high school ensemble.

My dad is a computer scientist...and from the time I was four years old (way back in the '80s) I was using a home computer. At that point "portable" computers weighed in the neighborhood of 50 pounds. I have grown up with all of the changes that have taken place with technology and have grown with them. I can certainly help you learn computer basics. From setting up your hardware and operating system to backing up, using external hardware, installing software, and generally navigating through programs from MS Word to the Apple OS and programs, I've got you covered. I personally use a PC as well as my iPad in conjunction with several other pieces of technology on a daily basis. As a student, Geometry was a subject I really enjoyed. It made sense to me, and I could easily find tricks to remembering the formulas and rules. The skills that I developed helped me immensely as I continued through the mathematics curriculum in high school. I love sharing those same tips and tricks with students to assist them in being successful in Geometry. Even if they never develop a great love of Geometry, having the understanding and knowledge to make it easier for them to progress through their math classes will help them be more confident. Ultimately, it will result in higher success rates in school and on standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT.

I work with each of my GMAT students to help them attain their individual goal score in order to gain entrance to the graduate school of their choice. Whether they are struggling with essay writing, quantitative, verbal, or integrated reasoning (or a combination of the four), I can help them understand the techniques and strategies necessary for garnering the largest number of possible points. For example, if a student has been away from formal writing for some time, I work with them step by step to refresh those skills and create focused, organized, and detailed essays (I always shoot for a 6 in this area). No matter what their individual needs, I, with the help of the Kaplan GMAT Premier, can help them bolster both their GMAT score and their confidence in their abilities.

Assisting students who wish to pass the GRE so that they can continue their education is one of the most rewarding experiences there is. I use a variety of online resources as well as traditional study materials to help people preparing for the GRE be as successful as possible. In some cases, it's been many years since they've had any traditional schooling, so I always like to start with a pretest to see what they know and how much work we need to do to help them be extremely prepared for the GRE. From there we concentrate on areas of need to make sure there is thorough understanding of the concepts.
ISEE

I regularly assist students who are preparing for various levels of testing from elementary standardized tests to the GRE, GMAT, and LSAT. For the Independent Schools Entrance Exam, I work to discover in what areas the student's strengths and needs lie, and then build their knowledge base accordingly. For example most students, particularly in the lower and middle grades areas struggle with fractions, decimals, and percentages. I work on explaining these concepts so that students understand the inter-relationship of them in a way that is applicable to their lives. I provide a solid foundation in all of the testing areas: verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, essay writing, quantitative reasoning, and mathematics achievement. As a former gifted student and educator, I believe that students need a challenging, rigorous curriculum to not only survive, but thrive in today's fast-paced, competitive environment. Taking this exam in order to attend an educational institution that is able to provide a quality curriculum is immensely valuable.

Though both of my parents were avid readers, as I young child I didn't like to read myself. I loved being read to, but picking up a book and reading it myself was out of the question. Somewhere around 4th grade I started picking up books on my own, and the rest is history. I fell in love with reading. I read in between classes, and rushed to get my work done so I could continue reading. In short I loved (and still love) reading! That being said, I developed a feeling a few summers ago that I hadn't read all of the literature that I should have between High School and College. Make no mistake, I was assigned and read a lot of literature, however, I felt that I had missed out on a lot. So I decided to start buying up classics and created my own Literature course. Over one summer I read "Wuthering Heights," "Dracula," "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court," "Our Town," "Lady Chatterly's Lover," and began reading "The Wizard of Oz" series from a 15 in one that I have. My library is very extensive including works from Shakespeare, Poe, Dickens, Louisa May Alcott, and much Russian literature. That doesn't included my online library of over 23,000 books that I have through applications on my iPad. It includes almost every piece of classic literature imaginable. I am the right person to help a student analyze and break down difficult lit because I'm ready, willing, and able to read it along with them!

I have always been a bit of a geek when it comes to doing logic problems and logic bombs. I was the kid who bought the books where I had to do brain teasers and figure out the who, what, where, and when of a given situation. Over the years, that has developed into being able to use my reasoning skills to be able to break through and make sense of wordy passages, legal terminology, etc. I'm also quite good at helping others figure those things out! I'd love to help you too!
Music History

Music History

Music history can be so much fun and completely interesting if it's taught from the right perspective. Making connections to other historical events, the art and architecture of the time period, and to the music that we listen to today are all ways of engaging a student's interest in music history. I use many resources from the Grout "A History of Western Music" as well as the Norton "Anthology of Western Music" to the Harper Collins "History of Western Music" as well as many online resources as tools to get the right information into the hands of my students. Listening is a large portion of music history. Being able to recognize different styles, time periods, and composers is absolutely key to solid music history education.

As a music student one of my very favorite areas of learning was Music Theory. I reveled in learning intervals, scales, chord structure, and voice leading (along with everything else)! I was also able to help my fellow classmates understand concepts in a way that made sense to them. My college professor always judged everyone else's understanding on mine. If I got it, he knew that I could help the rest of the class understand...if I didn't understand, he found a new way to explain it because he knew the rest of the class was completely lost! I'm so passionate about music theory, and I firmly believe that it assists musicians in understanding how to be better in all aspects of music. If you're struggling with playing, reading rhythms, understanding scales, key signatures, clef reading, etc., I can help you understand it!
Phonics

Phonics

I was taught phonics by my mother, a speech and hearing therapist. I studied phonics extensively including word origins to be able to better determine pronunciation, sound blends, commonly used letter combinations, etc. Phonics is so key to learning so many other English concepts. Students who master phonetic ideas are better spellers, learn word meanings from context clues more easily, and have much better reading fluency. I would love to help any student be more confident in their reading skills, and develop the love of reading and English that I have!
Praxis

In addition to passing Praxis exams in Music Content and Knowledge, Principles of Learning and Teaching K-6, General Knowledge, and Communication Skills myself, I've also successfully helped students pass exams in a variety of different subject areas including math, social studies, English, etc. I use the official Praxis study guides designed and published by ETS to assist students in being well prepared for the test. I understand the pressures that come with preparing for an exam that determines whether or not they will be able to student teach and/or get a teaching license! I supplement with other materials and information in order to ensure that my students have a wide range of experiences with tested material prior to their exam date. Additionally, I have helped numerous students in Pennsylvania who need assistance with the content/materials for both the PAPA and the PECT (Pre-K to 4 and Special Ed.). The same techniques that I used to pass my four tests can be applied across all subject areas to help students preparing to teach in any discipline.

Understanding the basic concepts is so important for a students ultimate mathematical success...up to and including math for the SAT and ACT. I was a high school student who struggled with organizing my writing. I was lucky enough to have a wonderful AP English teacher who taught me how to write in a way that made sense. In a very short period of time, my writing skills developed from disorganization to structure and confidence. During my junior year in high school I wasn't confident enough in my writing skills to attempt the AP English exam. With her help, I was not only confident enough to take it, but I was one of two students to achieve a 4 out of 5 on the Literature and Composition exam. My college professors asked where I learned to write so well, and my classmates (even the English majors) came to me to proofread their work. Most of my friends went from C's to B+'s and A's with my assistance. I use the same techniques she taught me to help students develop their writing skills rapidly, and feel as confident about their writing skills as I still do 15 years later! The same is true for proofreading. My goal is to help my students become better writers through proofreading. If they know how to write well, proofreading becomes very easy.

After having my students complete a diagnostic exam for the PSAT's, I create a plan of action that will properly prepare them for this very serious exam. I concentrate on improving areas of weakness, while reinforcing areas of strength. I use the Kaplan PSAT 2014 Study Book, as well as several other applications, and resources, to help students prepare. Using all of them in tandem gives a thorough review of all test areas, as well as targeted math drills, vocabulary words, and practice exams.
Reading

Though both of my parents were avid readers, as I young child I didn't like to read myself. I loved being read to, but picking up a book and reading it myself was out of the question. Somewhere around 4th grade I started picking up books on my own, and the rest is history. I fell in love with reading. I had been in low or middle reading groups from Kindergarten through 3rd grade, and I all of a sudden rocketed to the highest reading group. I read in between classes, and rushed to get my work done so I could continue reading. In short I loved (and still love) reading! It will come as no surprise that I was dismayed upon hearing that my cousins and my sister were not great lovers of reading. So I was inspired to start a cousins book club. My goal for them, and what it remains for all of my students, is to find that one book that sets their reading "bug" on fire. This can happen for a student who is struggling with fluency, with pronunciation, or with language acquisition. I find the key to making them want to read more. They say practice makes perfect, and in this case, they're right. You can't learn to read well if you feel so bad about yourself and your reading skills that you don't even want to pick up a book. My goal is to help my students look forward to reading, and become so engaged in reading that it stops being a chore and becomes an intrinsic reward.
SAT Math

SAT Math

For SAT Math tutoring, I have the students take a short diagnostic exam in order to identify on which concepts we should focus the most during tutoring. Though I cover all SAT concepts, I concentrate more on the ideas that each individual struggles with the most. From there, I create an action plan to help the student master those concepts in whatever time we've allotted for preparation. I use the Kaplan Premier SAT method which explains each problem in detail and includes several practice exams.

My goal for test preparation is to find out which concepts a student has mastered and which ones he/she struggles to understand. Based on that information I gather from a diagnostic pretest, I tailor the tutoring to concentrate on the areas where the student is struggling. For example, if a student has mastered the grammar and vocabulary concepts, I utilize those to improve their skills in reading for context/content and paragraph organization. This helps bring those concepts to life for the student. I use the Kaplan SAT Premier preparation book. It features several actual SAT practice tests.

Sight Singing

I am PA Certified in K-12 music education from Seton Hill University. My Bachelor of Music includes 8 credits of Aural Theory which includes ear training and sight singing, as well as melodic and harmonic dictation. I utilize Smart Music software, as well as the book "Listen and Sing" by David Damschroder as tools to build on a student's sight-singing abilities. I also access the student to various websites to practice and improve their skills. Sight-singing can be fun if a student has the right tools and instruction to feel successful!
SSAT

SSAT

Like the ISEE, the SSAT focuses attention on mathematics (1-2 sections depending on grade level), verbal (with a basis in vocabulary at the forefront), reading comprehension, and an unscored writing section. It is administered at three different levels: elementary (currently in grades 3 or 4), middle (currently in grades 5-7), and upper school (currently in grades 8-11). Additionally, students who are in grades 5-11 will be given an experimental section that is used to develop future test administrations. I work with each student to break down the areas in which they are struggling and focus on each, one at a time. Based on the child's individual needs we work in areas such as intensive vocabulary study, mathematics concepts review (or introduction to new concepts), or writing practice with focus on writing in active voice, parallelism, etc. My lessons are developed around each individual's specific needs rather than a standardized format so that each student has the opportunity to focus attention on areas that must be stronger for the exam.
TEAS

TEAS

I tutor all of the subject matter covered on the TEAS Exam including English, mathematics, reading, science, and language usage (grammar and the conventions of the English language). I also train students in specific testing techniques and strategies in order to help them optimize their ability to achieve their highest possible score. My students are extremely prepared in both content knowledge and testing methods so that they can approach the test from an offensive standpoint.
Vocabulary

For Vocabulary tutoring, I get a feel for student vocabulary range by speaking with them to see what their current comfort zone is. Vocabulary can be a lot of fun if it's learned in a creative way. As a student I was always eager to learn new words, find out how they should be used, and integrate them into my writing and speaking. Additionally, reading new words, finding out what they mean, and finding comfortable ways to express them in daily living can be extremely gratifying for students. My goal is to help students develop a love of vocabulary by helping them break difficult words down in a way that makes them easier to remember and understand. I use the "100's Words" Series that is published by the American Heritage Dictionary, as well as "The Joy of Vocabulary" to assist students in building a meaningful vocabulary and a love of the English language.
