I am a composer and music theorist with over twenty-five years of teaching experience at the university level. I hold a PhD in Composition and Music Theory from New York University, where I also completed a teaching certification program focused on college-level instruction. My training includes graduate study in composition at the Hochschule fr Musik in Cologne, Germany, and a Fulbright year in Warsaw devoted to music theory research. Over the course of my career, I have taught a wide range of subjects, including core music theory (from fundamentals through advanced chromatic harmony), ear training, counterpoint, composition, and courses for non-majors such as music appreciation.

I currently teach at Temple University's Boyer College of Music and Dance, and have also taught at New York University, Saint Joseph's University, Widener University, the University of Delaware, and other institutions. My experience spans both classroom teaching and individualized instruction, including one-on-one composition lessons and tutoring students at different levels-from beginners and non-majors to advanced undergraduate and graduate students. I am especially experienced in helping students who feel overwhelmed by theory courses, as well as those preparing for placement exams, AP Music Theory, or college-level study.

My teaching approach emphasizes clarity, structure, and listening. I focus on helping students understand not just how something works, but why it works, so that they can apply concepts independently. Whether we are working on fundamentals, harmony, ear training, or composition, I tailor each session to the student's goals and pace, breaking complex ideas into manageable steps while maintaining a sense of musical meaning. I aim to create a supportive and focused environment where students gain both confidence and lasting understanding.

Approved Subjects

Chess

Chess

I have studied and played chess for many years and bring to it the same structured, analytical approach that informs my work as a teacher. My study has included in-depth engagement with opening theory, particularly through the work of John Watson, as well as broader principles of strategy and positional play. I work especially well with beginner and intermediate players, helping them understand not just what moves to play, but why they work and how to think through positions independently. My goal is to develop clear habits of calculation, planning, and pattern recognition so that students can approach the game with confidence and insight.
Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I hold a PhD in Composition and Music Theory from New York University, as well as a Master of Music and Bachelor of Arts in Composition from Florida State University. I also studied composition in Germany at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for music theory research in Warsaw. My academic work includes a published dissertation and ongoing research in music theory and composition. I have over twenty-five years of teaching experience in both classroom and one-on-one settings. I currently teach at Temple University and have previously taught at New York University, Saint Joseph’s University, Widener University, and the University of Delaware. I have taught core music theory courses (Theory I–IV), ear training (sight singing and dictation), counterpoint, harmony (diatonic and chromatic), and composition lessons at the undergraduate and graduate levels. My students have ranged from beginners and non-majors to advanced music majors and graduate students. In addition to my teaching experience, I am an active composer whose work has received awards and been performed in professional settings. My teaching approach focuses on breaking complex concepts into clear, manageable steps while helping students develop long-term understanding and independence. I am especially experienced in helping students prepare for college-level study, placement exams, and composition portfolios.
Ear Training

Ear Training

I hold a PhD in Composition and Music Theory from New York University and have over twenty-five years of experience teaching ear training and aural skills at the university level. I have taught multiple semesters of sight singing and dictation as part of core musicianship sequences at institutions including Temple University and New York University, working with both music majors and non-majors. My teaching includes interval recognition, melodic and harmonic dictation, rhythm training, and the development of inner hearing. I specialize in helping students who find ear training difficult by breaking listening skills into clear, repeatable steps and reinforcing them through structured practice. I have worked with beginners developing basic pitch and rhythm skills as well as advanced students preparing for college placement exams and upper-level coursework. My goal is to help students build reliable listening habits so that they can accurately hear, understand, and notate music with confidence.
