The best teachers I have ever had are the ones who made me feel capable before I even had a chance to realize I had learned something! I like to bring that energy into my own lessons, supporting my students and making them feel confident they can achieve anything they put their minds to.
Before I became a classroom teacher, I was a singer. I attended Pacific Lutheran University where I earned a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. During this time I participated in the Choir of the West, Chamber Choir, musicals, and numerous operas, all while teaching young singers in private lessons. I have continued teaching voice lessons ever since, working with students from elementary school age through young adulthood on classical technique, breath support, diction across multiple languages, and audition preparation.
I am also a certified elementary school teacher. I hold a Master of Arts in Teaching from Western Governors University and a Pennsylvania Department of Education certification in Elementary Education, PreK through Grade 4. I currently teach Kindergarten in the School District of Philadelphia, working with a classroom of 20 to 25 students that includes students with IEPs and a student population that is more than 50 percent English Language Learners. During this time, I spent two years supporting students in afterschool tutoring settings, working with elementary-age students one-on-one on foundational reading, phonics, and literacy skills. Being able to connect with students from diverse backgrounds and learning styles makes this work meaningful and worthwhile.
My approach for every lesson is to start by understanding what the student already knows and what they need to start thriving. I introduce new material in a fun way that feels achievable, give students plenty of space to practice and make mistakes, and adjust constantly based on how they are responding. I am patient, I am encouraging, and I genuinely enjoy this work. I would love the opportunity to help more students find their footing.
