Hello, I'm Jessica. I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary and Special Education. While attending college, I worked as a Title I Aide for more than 8 years at a local school district where I assisted students that needed extra support in the classroom and worked one on one with students in math, reading, and writing. Also, I was also an aide in a Life Skills classroom for two years where I assisted students with special needs and worked with children with multiple disabilities during my field experience while pursuing my special education degree. I have taught math, language arts, history, science classes to fourth and fifth grades, English to learning support students grades 9-12 and learning support to students in 7th-8th grades and 5th-6th grade social studies.
I enjoy teaching all classes with hands-on techniques and other learning methods that give students the ability to touch and see things instead of just reading textbooks and worksheets. Since I enjoy reading, I try to teach the love of reading to children. Also, I am a visual and kinetic (hands-on) learner and I use manipulatives to show math concepts such as adding, subtracting and fractions. I realize that students learn in many different ways and I try to find their learning style and what their strengths and weaknesses are and build on their strengths and work on weaknesses to make the child successful.
I believe that teaching should be presented in a fun and interesting way that will keep the students engaged and try to do this as much as I can in my lessons. When presenting lessons in reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary, I show the students examples of good reading and writing and then model them to the students instead of just telling them how it is done so they can also hear and see fluent reading or writing. When teaching vocabulary, I teach strategies that helps students to connect words to what they already know and ways to help them remember the definitions.
