I hold a PhD in physics from Pennsylvania State University and a bachelor's degree in physics with a minor in mathematics from Temple University. I tutor high school and undergraduate physics, including mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and quantum mechanics. In mathematics I cover everything from algebra through the full calculus sequence, probability and statistics, and differential equations, both ordinary and partial. My teaching began at a learning center, where I spent a year with students ranging from elementary through high school, followed by two years tutoring undergraduates at Temple. At Penn State I spent more than five years as a graduate teaching assistant and tutor, running recitations and lab sections and holding office hours for introductory and intermediate physics, and then a year as a graduate lecturer with my own course. Alongside all of that I have tutored privately for years, one on one, with high school students, college students, and adults returning to school. Outside of teaching I have worked as a researcher, software engineer, and financial modeler, so I can usually answer the question of where a particular piece of mathematics actually gets used.
My approach is to teach students "how to fish". In a session I would rather hand a student a problem and let them take a wrong turn than narrate a clean solution they will have forgotten by the weekend. Mistakes made in a low-stakes setting are how someone learns which approaches suit them, which ones do not, and how to get unstuck on a problem they have never seen before. It costs a little time at the start and pays off for the rest of their education. I work well with students who are behind and want to catch up, and equally well with students who are already comfortable and want to go further. I tutor online and locally, and I set my own hours, so my availability is flexible.
