I have over 15 years experience teaching all subjects to inner city and suburban students from preschool through sixth grade. I am passionate about teaching reading and math and am an expert in delivering scientific based reading instruction that is effective for all types of learners including those with Dyslexia.

My expertise is in teaching reading to students who struggle with learning to read. For those with dyslexia, I utilize a systematic phonics approach with emphasis on speech sounds, the skill known to cause difficulty for students with this disorder. I always start by assessing student skills to create individualized reading/writing lessons to generate the best results.

I have a Master's Degree in Education from Manahattanville College, and am a certified teachers for grades N-6. I have held full time teaching positions in grades 2-4 and have substituted or student taught in the remaining grades.

With 8 years as a tutor, I have worked one-on-one to create individualized math lessons based on a student's strengths and weaknesses. In addition, my expertise in ADHD allows me to keep students engaged and motivated to enhance learning.

I have been tutoring individual students online to improve their phonics skills for the past 8 years. My experience includes 9 years as an elementary teacher, 5 years as an educational consultant providing training and coaching for public school teachers in phonics instruction, and 2 years as an adjunct professor teaching reading courses to elementary teacher candidates at Kutztown University. A phonics assessment is given prior to instruction to allow for individualized lessons to address the student's strengths and weaknesses.

Excellent tutor - very knowledgeable, very directed

This is our third lesson after the assessment and I think it's going great. I really like how directed Helen's lessons are, and she keeps the lesson going at a fairly fast pace which I think helps keep my daughter on task and hold her attention. She manages to challenge her, keep her engaged, and get her to really apply herself while also being encouraging. I feel really optimistic in how much progress my daughter can make with Helen this coming year!
