I am an elementary school educator with over 20 years of experience in bilingual and dual language programs. I have worked as a classroom teacher, Bilingual Reading Specialist (English/Spanish), and English Learner Resource Teacher. I have also taught English as a Second Language classes to adults.
When I am not teaching, I enjoy reading, sewing, and spending time outdoors. I am a lifelong learner, and even after obtaining my masters degree I continue to pursue opportunities to keep up with current research and hone my teaching skills. What I enjoy most about tutoring is tailoring my instruction to the needs of individual students, and seeing their confidence grow as they experience success.
My strengths include the ability to develop fun, engaging lessons that build upon what a student already knows while targeting their areas of need. Through assessment and observation I am able to identify a student’s areas of strength and to tailor lessons to their abilities and interests.
In addition to an elementary teaching license, I have an endorsement in Bilingual Education and English as a Second Language. I also have a great deal of experience working with second language learners, both children and adults. As an adult, I myself am learning Italian and ASL, so I understand how it feels to learn an additional language. This has helped me to better understand the struggles that language learners can experience and has helped me to realize the importance of meeting students where they are and creating fun learning experiences that help them feel comfortable and to build upon what they know.
I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish, and am certified to teach Spanish as a Foreign Language to students in grades K-9. I have also spent time living, studying, and teaching in Central and South America.

Sheila Makes Learning Fun!

We’ve been working with Sheila for reading and writing support for our 10-year-old, and she has been nothing short of amazing. From the very beginning, Sheila has shown flexibility, creativity, and a deep understanding of how to engage young learners. She tutors our son twice a week, focusing on reading fluency and writing, and we’ve already seen great improvement in both his confidence and skills. What’s most impressive is how much our 3rd grader enjoys his time with her—he doesn’t whine about lessons or need reminders. In fact, he actively looks forward to their sessions! Sheila has a great way of tuning into his interests and channeling that into meaningful learning. Her positive energy, thoughtful lesson planning, and genuine connection with our son have made a world of difference. We’re so grateful to have found Sheila and highly recommend her to any family looking for a supportive and engaging tutor.

Knowledgeable and very experienced

For the past couple months, Sheila has been working with my twins who are struggling readers and will be getting tested for LD. She has been monumental in helping them read. I can already hear and see some improvement in my girls and that is HUGE especially with how hard they’ve been struggling last year and especially this year. Sheila always has her lesson plans ready which include a lot of “tricks” up her sleeves for the kiddos to enjoy while learning. She’s amazing! I’m a teacher myself (music) and I have no idea how she executes her lessons so flawlessly filled with so many engaging activities. I’m really glad we found her to help supplement my girls learning. I’d highly recommend her whether you are learning English or Spanish! (We are doing Spanish since my girls are in a Spanish immersion program.) I can only imagine her experience in English literacy if her teaching Spanish is of such high quality!
