Building effective study skills is a key to success in any class, no matter what age. I will show students a number of techniques to help them understand and retain more information, greatly contributing to their success.
I look forward to hearing from you! I am an enthusiastic math and science teacher with 20 years of experience teaching all age levels including college. I am especially good at making difficult concepts understandable by helping students to build a step-by step understanding of the information.
I currently tutor a wide-range of math and science related subjects: all k-12
Laura is the best tutor you could ask for. She prepares extensively for each lesson, provides clear information and does well with teenagers. She is easy to work with and very knowledgeable about math. My son needed extensive tutoring in Calculus 2, which is a very difficult subject. Laura provided better instruction than his professor and we will not hesitate to use her again in the future.
You will definitely want to study with her, she has a very good knowledge of mathematics, if you can not understand the subject as in my case, she explains it to you again, and again, as many times as necessary with a lot of patience. .
I can not measure how much she helped me with my university test, but I know that without her I would not have done it
Laura has taught both my children. She has encouraged them to do well in a subject that does not come easy to them. Since studying with Laura both of their grades has improved greatly. We feel lucky to have found her. Always prepared, reliable and a great teacher.
I had Ms. Laura for the first time today for math help. She was GREAT!!!!!! She was funny, kind, knowledgable and congratulated me when I got a problem correct! She even gave me a cool fact at the end!
Geometry packet and SAT prep in future, advisement. Refresher in math. Very flexible hours on weekend. Continuous checking with understanding of concepts before moving on.
Laura write down everything important that she said and send me everything we went over in class which is very helpful. she is enthuisatic and nice to work with.
Although this was my son's first session with her, my son felt Ms. Laura was a great tutor. She was very prepared and could explain the concepts. We will use her services again.
My son started first SAT I Math lesson with Laura, he likes the way Laura teach. My son said she is much better than the previous teacher. I am glad we found Laura. We will continuously use Laura for his other Math related class.
She is very enthusiastic and patient. I had minor slip ups but she helped me understand what I was learning, and had interesting ways for me to remember it. I liked her method of teaching and can't wait for another session!
Today's lesson focused on the essay part of SAT and introduction to SATcalculator math. Previous lessons reviewed vocab and non calculator math. More SAT lessons are planned with Laura. In today's school, SAT tutoring is not offered and local library only offers online help. I am not sure why counselors aren't organizing this for the kids in school. I totally recommend seeking a tutor because your kid only lives these years once and will be branded with his/her SAT score for life. Fortunately, Laura is willing to share her knowledge and is a wonderful person. A true role model.
Laura did a great job. She knows the material, was easy to work with and a good communicator. She added extra materials and patiently worked to develop understanding of complex concepts.
Laura made a hard to understand topic much easier for me to understand. I feel ready for my test. Big thank you!
Laura is helping my son prepare for the SAT. She goes out of her way to schedule a practice test and reviews the test afterward. The emails that she sends following each tutoring session are always helpful and I appreciate it as a parent to stay informed. She is always easy to correspond with if you have any questions as well.
Laura goes above and beyond to accommodate your schedule. My daughter stated that Laura explains PreCalculus better than her math teacher at school does. We look forward to working with her again as much as possible. Thanks Laura!
Laura is an exceptional teacher. She has helped my 11th grader with honors chem, college calc, and is currently doing SAT math prep. She makes every topic easy to understand. She is very pleasant and has a very easy going teaching style. She provides extra material and gives "homework" to prepare for the next session so the sessions are very organized and my student gets the most out of the time with Laura. Highly recommend!!
Laura helped my daughter with IB statistics. She was satisfied with her teaching style and came prepared for the lesson. Laura also followed up with material to help her with her project.
It was my son's first AP Chemistry lesson with Laura. He seemed comfortable with her and felt the session helped. We plan to continue our sessions.
Laura came to the session well prepared and ready to teach. She patiently worked with my daughter answering her questions, and helping her figure out the concepts she did not understand in Precalculus. She helped my daughter work through the problems, so she truly understood. Thank you.
It had been 18 yrs. since I was last in any college classroom and even longer since college level math and I knew I would need some help. Laura was the perfect choice in tutors to prepare me for Trig and Calc 1. She was quick to determine my weaknesses and explain concepts in ways that were easily understood which helped me to strengthen my skills and "ACE" my first course.
Laura is a very patient, and accommodating tutor who really does take a personal interest in her students. I found her flexible in her scheduling able to work around my employment and class commitments and she never made me feel rushed thru as I have experienced with others. Laura was always prepared and proficient in the subject matter at hand. As I continue to pursue my degree I will definitely be scheduling with Laura for tutoring in Physics, Calc 2 etc.
New ways to figure out math problems. I had no idea what I was doing. I was so confused. Finally I am gaining confidence. I am understanding so much more.
Laura is an excellent tutor. We will be scheduling additional appointments. We are very satisfied with her knowledge and tutoring ability.
My daughter has improved her geometry grade incredibly. She loves tutoring with Laura and can not wait to see her every week!
Laura is a very kind and patient tutor. My daughter has learned so many things about SAT math strategies. Thank you so much, Laura.
Laura is amazing! My son immediately connected with her on our first visit. She is patient and kind and takes time to listen to him even when unrelated to his school work, yet keeps him focused and on task. His Algebra IA grade has gone from a "D" to a "B" and will probably become an "A" as his test taking skills improve.
Laura is very intelligent and knows what to do to engage the kids. She also goes out of her way to make sure she has a copy of their current books and has worksheets to correlate with their current lessons.
She is also easy to reach, and she usually can fit my son in after school within a day or two and sometimes even the same day. Laura has been a true gift and has eased my son's anxiety and given him confidence. I highly recommend her.
Nicole has told me that after lessons with Laura, she has really been able to help her improve her SAT reading sections by giving her very helpful suggestions on how to attack the problems.
I found WyzAnt Tutoring online on Saturday and Laura met with my son on Sunday. Laura had spent several hours on Saturday evening getting prepared to meet with my son regarding the material he was working on. I am so impressed by Laura's tutoring and will be telling my friends about her. My son came home from the tutoring session back on top of his "game" and I could see the relief on his face when he walked through the door. I asked him to give me feedback about Laura. He told me she was very prepared, patient, nice and knowledgeable. I asked him if he would like to work with her again if he is having trouble. His response was "ABSOLUTELY!" To me that says it all! I will definitely be contacting her again when we need a tutor!
Laura goes above and beyond! She has worked with my son several months on Algebra 2 and SAT prep. She was compassionate and very easy to get in touch with.... A+
Laura was a wonderful help to my daughter in her Algebra class. AAA+++!! Thanks and we will be in touch for the next class!!
My son needed tutoring for an AP Physics test. Upon very short notice, Laura agreed to tutor him. We sent her the review packet and she stayed up very late the night before preparing herself so she was sure that she could teach him how to do the problems. Thanks so much!
My experience has been wonderful. Laura C has a lot of qualities that make her an awesome tutor. As a result of her patience and kindness and strong knowledge of how kids learn, we are getting fabulous results. My daughter's grades have gone up but most importantly she tackles her math homework and tests with greater confidence. This cuts our math homework time in half. She now approaches her homework with a more positive outlook. I have recommended Laura to my friends and will continue to do so. I am very thrilled with my experience with Laura C.
Thank you Laura.
My son had his first session with Laura yesterday 03/22/2013. As we walked out, he said to me, "Mom, she explained it in a way that just made sense. I completely get it." That meant the world to me b/c he has been struggling all year and not getting it. For the first time, I saw an excitement in him because he actually understood what he was doing! Thanks so much Laura. He is excited to come back to tutoring which is half the battle.
My daughter was struggling with her high school Anatomy class, so we contacted WyzAnt to help us locate a tutor. Laura responded promptly and has continued to deliver in every aspect!
Laura was able to schedule a short notice tutoring session, she is always on time and comes to the session very well prepared. Laura was able to connect with my daughter quickly, is knowledgeable and teaches the material in a way that is easy to understand. In only 3 sessions, my daughter has brought her grade up two levels!
We have never needed a tutor, so we went into this very skeptical. Our experience has been extraordinarily positive and we highly recommend both Laura and Wyzant to anyone needing a tutor.
Laura is helping my daughter focus on the upcoming SAT test and college prep. She is teaching her techniques for the test and this gives my daughter the tools to approach it with confidence.
My son has been working with Laura for just over 6 months and it has been a fantastic experience! She is very knowledgeable, patient, and skilled. She has helped my son bring up his grade and maintain it to an acceptable level. I can not imagine not having Laura around; her teaching is outstanding.
I hired Laura as a tutor for my daughter who was taking college level general chemistry. I can't say enough good things about her. She was able to break down the material into understandable concepts. Laura was available at all times; day and night. She was willing to tutor on the 4th of July, Sunday nights, mornings at 8am and was willing to tutor at a variety of locations, including Barnes and Nobles, the Greensburg library, and Westmoreland County Community College. She even tutored once while she was ill and on antibiotics. She was always prepared with work sheets and practice tests and tried to stay one step ahead of the teacher. Laura was a real gem with a genuine desire to see my daughter succeed. I would highly recommend her to anyone struggling with chemistry.
I went to Laura to prepare for my second time taking the SAT. We met and went over math concepts and when I look the SAT my score increased from 1910 to 2040.
Laura is the most wonderfully patient person I know. She guides me with her knowledge in a way that makes me understand Chemistry. She thinks outside the box and isn't afraid to admit and to locate answers that she doesn't understand herself. We actually have a good time learning. Thanks Laura, you are the bomb.
We were very fortunate to have Laura as our son's Chemistry 2 tutor. She prepared worksheets, went over topics with him that would be covered in class and had him make flashcards, to help him study after the session. She showed great professionalism and enthusiasm for her work in her reviews. She also met with him on his campus since he did have transportation. I would highly recommend Laura as a tutor and may use her in the future if needed.
Laura is always patient, prepared, thorough, and accommodating. She has definitely helped my daughter with her studies. I highly recommend her.
Our daughter struggled through Algebra II last year, so we enrolled her in a learning center. Her grades only improved slightly. The center was not convenient and lacked individual attention.
This year we chose Laura as her tutor for College Algebra/Trigonometry. We've seen an improvement of almost two letter grades. We are very pleased with her progress as she needed to pass the course to graduate next year.
Laura is dependable, well prepared, and always positive!
Laura has been a great asset in my children's academics. Originally she was tutoring my daughter in ACT prep and calculus. When my son began having issues with honors geometry we sent him to Laura as well. She has been amazing with both of them. Definitely goes above and beyond. Not only does she spend the one on one time with them but keeps herself well prepared in what material each is working on. We will definitely continue to use her as a tutor even throughout their college years if necessary. Definitely highly recommend.
I was very fortunate to have found Laura to tutor my son. He must pass a business calculus course at Pitt in order to graduate. She provides the expertise, mathematical knowledge, and patience to instruct him. She works many hours preparing every detail of his complicated lessons. She is always extremely organized, punctual and very conscientious. She diligently reports what she has accomplished during each instructional tutoring session. She is very mathematically gifted and has the ability to explain complicated concepts with ease. My son feels very comfortable working with her. He is gaining the confidence and mathematical knowledge he was lacking and has earned very high scores on the tests given so far. I am extremely pleased with her tutoring skills. I would highly recommend her.
I was given the confidence to finally pass my GED. I never did well in school because I needed more help than my teachers could give. For a lot of reasons, I quit. Now I am going onto the next step and I feel better about myself. Thank you, I couldn't have done it without you.
Laura C. impressed me with her thoughtful response to our inquiry for a math tutor. It's clear that she is an experienced tutor from her approach in presenting a tutoring plan based on the student's needs, which includes insight and use of current teaching materials. I very much appreciate the fact that she tries to understand my student's strengths, with the goal of mastering the subject matter, as well as improving confidence level!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I help my algebra students achieve their academic goals by using creative techniques that I have developed over the past 20 years. These techniques include visual as well as auditory cues, enabling students who were struggling with this course to greatly surpass their expectations. Algebra is a key foundational math course, and my students then go on to succeed in higher level math classes, such as algebra 2.
Algebra 2 students often struggle with the array of new functions that they encounter, such as quadratic, exponential and log functions, to name a few. I help my students to build a strong foundation in understanding this library of functions, through a variety of visual and auditory mnemonics and other techniques that I have developed over decades of teaching this course. By the end of this course, my students are well prepared to move on to precalculus, where they will dig deeper into this library of functions!
Calculus is one of the most fascinating and enjoyable classes that I tutor, and my students benefit from my enthusiasm and knowledge. In addition to working with their course material, I have an array of textbooks and workbooks to supplement their sessions.
Last summer, I worked one-on-one with a dyslexic girl. Her mother had been concerned because she had only learned to read that past December and was old enough to be in second grade. After I worked with her all summer, she returned to her regular school and was tested. She had advanced two grade levels over the summer and was able to be placed in her correct age group. I have also worked with dyslexic children previous to private tutoring, while working at a local learning center.
While, I do not encounter as many students needing help with ecology as many other math and science courses that I tutor, I am always ready and able to provide assistance with this course. While earning my undergraduate and graduate degrees, I studied and taught a variety of ecology related courses, including aquatic and terrestrial botany, entomology, and stream ecology. Whether students are working on the ecology portion of a freshman biology class, or taking a full ecology course, I have the background, study techniques, and resources to help attain their academic goals.
I am an enthusiastic math and science teacher with 18 years of experience teaching all age levels including college. When tutoring elementary students, I incorporate diagnostic testing, workbooks, and school studies into the students' sessions. There are many diagnostic tests available that can help me to assess an elementary student's areas of weaknesses in a range of subjects, including; reading comprehension in a variety of subjects, vocabulary (word recognition and definition), and math skills. Based on the results of the tests, I can then incorporate practice in these areas using workbooks. I also work closely with elementary students in regards to their school studies. My three-part program has been successful in raising students' grades and confidence in their subject matter.
While in graduate school at the University of Pittsburgh, I was a teaching assistant for a college genetics class for several semesters, and wrote many exam problems, graded exams, and taught recitations for the students. I also taught genetics while homeschooling high school students, and also while attaining my teaching certificate at Taylor Allderdice. Finally, I currently tutor genetics within the realm of biology for high school students.
I have a secondary certificate in biology and currently teach a wide range of math and science skills to students K-12 through adult. The Praxis exam's math component includes the following math skills: basic operations and numbers, fractions, percents, ratios, exponents, and geometry. I currently teach all of these math skills to my students in courses including: pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, SAT math, and GED math. For Praxis students, I will incorporate a Praxis study book into my library of materials for student practice and review.
I have tutored SAT math, reading, and writing for the past eight years. I currently recommend that my students purchase the College Board Complete SAT book, which includes 10 practice tests. After reviewing actual SAT tests that were previously taken by students, I have found that the College Board book is most similar to the actual SAT tests. I also utilize workbooks and worksheets to supplement math sessions.
My SAT program is very successful, and students find that their scores increase by hundreds of points after completing their sessions. I look forward to helping your student achieve their SAT goals!
