My name is Heather, and I bring a unique blend of educational experience, leadership, and organization to my role as a tutor. I spent over 10 years teaching elementary education in grades Pre-K through 4 in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Illinois. During that time, I worked with students of various learning styles, abilities, and backgrounds, which gave me a deep understanding of how to meet each child where they are and help them grow from there.
In addition to my teaching background, I currently serve as a Major in the U.S. Army Reserves and have worked as an International Logistics Coordinator. These experiences have strengthened my ability to stay organized, communicate clearly, and remain adaptable—skills that are just as valuable in education as they are in leadership and logistics.
When it comes to tutoring, my approach is very student-centered. I start by getting to know the student’s strengths, challenges, and learning preferences. I believe in building a strong foundation, so I take time to assess their current understanding and then tailor lessons to fill in gaps and strengthen skills in a structured, step-by-step way. I use a mix of direct instruction, hands-on activities, and guided practice to keep sessions engaging and meaningful.
I also believe strongly in creating a positive and encouraging learning environment. Confidence plays a huge role in academic success, so I make it a priority to celebrate progress and help students develop a growth mindset. I communicate openly with parents to keep them informed and involved, and I’m always willing to adjust my methods to best support the student’s needs.
Ultimately, my goal as a tutor is to help students not only improve their academic skills but also develop a genuine sense of confidence and independence in their learning. I want them to walk away from each session feeling capable, supported, and motivated to keep growing.
