I’m a linguist with a Master’s degree in Linguistics and over five years of teaching experience working with students from elementary age through adults. My academic background gave me deep expertise in how languages work—phonetics, grammar, syntax, and language acquisition—which means I don’t just teach English rules, I help students truly understand why the language works the way it does. I’ve taught ESL to diverse populations including high school students, adult immigrants, and international learners, working both in classroom settings and one-on-one tutoring. My cross-cultural perspective, having grown up bilingual in Japan, helps me connect with students navigating the challenges of learning a new language or adapting to American academic expectations.

In addition to my linguistics background, I spent ten years working as a programmer, which gave me strong analytical and problem-solving skills that translate into tutoring math and computer science. I approach technical subjects the same way I approach language—breaking down complex concepts into understandable pieces and helping students build confidence through steady progress. Whether I’m helping an elementary student with multiplication, a middle schooler with algebra, or a high school student learning programming, I focus on making abstract concepts concrete and accessible.

My tutoring philosophy centers on meeting students where they are and adapting to their individual learning styles. I’ve worked with struggling readers, advanced writers preparing college essays, and adult ESL learners building communication skills. I believe in creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes—because that’s how real learning happens. My editing experience means I can help students polish their writing from basic grammar to sophisticated argumentation. I’m patient, encouraging, and committed to helping each student develop genuine confidence in their abilities.

Accent Reduction

Accent Reduction

I have experience teaching Accent Reduction as part of my ESL instruction, and I hold a Master’s degree in Linguistics with advanced study in phonetics, phonology, and second language sound acquisition. I have taught learners from a wide range of language backgrounds and am skilled at helping students hear and produce the key contrasts in English that affect clarity and confidence. I also completed three summers of linguistic fieldwork training at the Summer Institute of Linguistics, focusing on sound systems and pronunciation patterns across languages. My approach is supportive, patient, and tailored to your natural speaking style — we work together to develop clearer, more confident speech without losing your unique voice.
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

I grew up in a Christian tradition that emphasizes thoughtful study of Scripture, and I have maintained an active faith practice throughout my life. I also took Bible and theology courses at Geneva College, which helped me develop tools for interpretation, historical context, and understanding themes across the Old and New Testaments. My husband is a pastor, and we are involved in our church community, which continues to shape my understanding and practice. I aim to support learners in exploring Scripture with clarity, confidence, and respect for both its depth and personal significance.
Common Core

I provide patient, step-by-step support for students learning Common Core math and language arts. I focus on helping students understand the reasoning behind the methods so that skills feel logical and manageable, not confusing or rushed. I have experience tutoring elementary learners in reading, writing, and foundational math, including helping students and parents navigate newer instructional approaches. My goal is to build confidence, clarity, and steady learning habits in a calm and encouraging environment.
Computer Science

Computer Science

I worked for 10 years as a software developer, and I now tutor students who are learning the fundamentals of programming and computer science. I am especially good at supporting beginners, students who feel overwhelmed by technical vocabulary, or those who need concepts explained step-by-step. I can help with basic programming concepts, debugging, reading and understanding code, and developing steady problem-solving habits. My goal is to make programming feel approachable, logical, and confidence-building — not intimidating.
Cooking

Cooking

I offer supportive, step-by-step home cooking lessons for beginners and those looking to feel more confident and relaxed in the kitchen. I focus on practical skills such as meal prep, knife safety, basic techniques, seasoning, and building simple, balanced meals. I have years of experience cooking for my family and teaching others in informal settings, and I enjoy helping learners feel comfortable, capable, and empowered to cook food they truly enjoy. My teaching style is calm, friendly, and adapted to your pace and preferences.
Creative Writing

Homeschool

Homeschool

I provide one-on-one academic support for homeschool and virtual learners, focusing on building confidence, clear understanding, and strong study habits. I was homeschooled myself, so I’m familiar with how flexible, individualized learning works and how to create a calm and steady learning rhythm. I have experience tutoring children in ESL, reading, writing, and foundational math, as well as supporting my own children’s learning at home. My approach is gentle, patient, and structured — I focus on helping students understand why things work, not just memorizing steps. I work well with students who benefit from clear explanations, reassurance, and consistent encouragement.
Linguistics

Linguistics

I hold a Master’s degree in Linguistics, where I completed advanced coursework and research in syntax, semantics, phonology, morphology, and language acquisition. I also passed my Ph.D.-level qualifying exams with distinction and have experience supporting undergraduate students in linguistics courses. I am skilled at breaking down complex theoretical concepts into clear, approachable explanations, and I work especially well with students who are new to formal linguistic analysis or who need help organizing their thinking for assignments and papers.
Logic

Logic

I have a strong background in logic and reasoning and scored highly on the analytical reasoning and critical thinking portions of the GRE. I’ve been doing logic puzzles since childhood, and I enjoy teaching students how to break problems down step-by-step, recognize patterns, and understand argument structure. My approach is patient and explanation-focused. I help students learn how and why reasoning works, not just how to get the answer. This builds confidence, clarity, and transferable thinking skills that apply across subjects and real-life problem solving.
