Greetings!

I have always been able to "reach" people. I guess that's why I became a teacher; that, and my love of language, literature and writing! I have spent the best years of my life in the classroom turning my students on to the beauty of language and literature. Serving as an AP reader every June was an opportunity to see what the best high school writers in the nation were capable of!

For a teacher of writing, the goal must always be to help students find their "personal voice," and to use that voice to change the world! College application essays can be a source of frustration for students. But this is the chance to reveal the person you really are - what inspires you to succeed, keeps you focused on your goals, and gives you a reason to wake up every morning and face the day!

A strong advocate of high expectations in the classroom and the power of AP courses to prepare students for college, I decided after thirty years to accept a position with the College Board. In my role as an Educational Manager, I had the privilege of introducing school districts to strategies for raising the SAT and AP scores of their students.
This brought me such joy!

As a former AP English teacher, AP reader and workshop presenter for the College Board, I can provide valuable instruction in preparation for both the multiple choice and free response sections of the AP English Literature and Language exams, as well as the Reading and Writing sections of the SAT.

As I sit here and reflect on the students I have known throughout my career [as I often do], I am again reminded that teaching has been the greatest privilege of my life.

Dedicated and Productive Tutor

We have found Ellen to be an excellent tutor. After about 5 or so lessons, my son raised his AP English Lang grade from a B to an A-. We hope to continue our weekly lessons during the school year to further advance his improvement. Ellen provides sample essay prompts and/or sample multi-choice question exams, where the student can do these before the lesson, if the student has time. Ellen will review and identify specific areas for improvement. Alternatively, the student can submit an in-class essay or other questions beforehand for Ellen to review. Because of this, the actual lesson with Ellen is highly productive, where she teaches rhetorical analysis, analysis of sample prompts, effective structure of an essay, the use of precise and concise writing, analysis of the multiple choice questions, among other items. If you are taking AP English Lang and need some help, Ellen would be great choice.
