Hello, I am Professor Kate! With over 15 years of experience, I've dedicated my career to helping students understand history and build confidence in the classroom. I currently teach at Stevenson University and the Community College of Baltimore County, assisting high school and college students in achieving their goals and developing their skills. I meet students where they are, whether it's mastering a skill, passing an AP test, or navigating a challenging course.
I've taught American History, World History, and Western Civilization, and I guide students through the writing process for their papers. My focus is on writing support, helping students organize their thoughts into strong essays, improve their thesis statements, grammar, and become comfortable with citation formatting in MLA, APA, or Chicago styles. Mastering these skills brings a sense of accomplishment and empowerment.
History can seem daunting, but I move beyond memorizing dates and battles, crafting the narrative of humanity. We explore why events matter and their impact on our world today, breaking down complex time periods into relatable stories that engage students. This understanding makes answering DBQs and forming opinions for essays more manageable and interesting. Geography plays a key role in this context, as understanding the world's climate and environment can significantly influence historical outcomes.
Essay writing and proofreading often feel overwhelming, but I'm here to help navigate these challenges. Many assume that students who pass Freshman Comp master writing, but this isn’t always true. It’s a skill that can become rusty over time. I work with students to develop thesis statements, structure papers, streamline proofreading, and create proper Works Cited pages for research projects. My approach fosters independence by teaching fundamental skills in a collaborative manner, ensuring students grow and improve. I’m well-versed in MLA, APA, and Chicago formatting styles.
