Hello! My name is Ivy and I am honored to be considered as a possible literacy tutor for your child!
While I may be new to the Wyzant platform, I am certainly not new to teaching. With twenty years experience in education, my background spans teaching in diverse NYC elementary school classrooms, as well as mentoring other educators to elevate their instructional practices. Currently, I work with students one-on-one to strengthen their literacy skills and it has been the highlight of my teaching career.
Throughout my years as an educator, I have witnessed firsthand how reading and writing can come so effortlessly to some, while proving to be a significant challenge for others. Having difficulty learning to read and write, however, does not reflect a child’s intelligence or potential. Instead, reading struggles often indicate a child requires a different approach to literacy instruction. With the right approach, your child can undoubtedly succeed.
For the last two years I completed extensive training in dyslexia and Orton-Gillingham methodologies and I am now certified at the Associate Level by the Orton-Gillingham Academy to teach both dyslexic and struggling readers alike. The Orton-Gillingham Approach is widely considered the gold standard in Structured Literacy for teaching reading, spelling and writing to students with dyslexia or those with language-based learning differences.
Additionally, beyond my extensive years of experience as a classroom educator and teacher mentor, I have years of experience tutoring students virtually online, many as young as five years old. While some may be apprehensive of online tutoring for young students, I have found it to be incredibly effective when tailored to students’ specific needs.
In short, whether your child has a language based learning disability, such as dyslexia, or just needs additional support, I am here to help!
