About John

Bio

I am a recent college graduate living in the Pittsburgh area. I attended a small liberal arts college, and my subjects reflect that fact. While in college, I tutored other students in reading and writing, and I found it to be one of the most rewarding jobs of my life. Informally, I tutor several older adults hoping to go to college for the first time.

I strongly believe in learning for learning's sake. Learning is not just about passing tests and getting into college. Rather, learning is...

Rather, learning is a journey that changes you for the better. To that end, my style is a Socratic "guiding" style that elicits reaction and questioning from the student. I do not stress tedious drills and rote memorization. I strive to put all knowledge into context so it may become a tool at the ready disposal of the student for the rest of their lives. You will find that I am passionate about the subjects I teach, and this passion is infectious. I hope to hear from you so that we can begin your journey into lifelong learning!

Approved Subjects

American History

American History

I have my materials divided between pre and post Civil War. History was, in fact, one of my concentrations when studying for my undergraduate degree, and I have retained much of the notes and materials used.
Psychology

Psychology

Psychology was one of my concentrations during my undergraduate years. As with my other subjects, I retain all of my books and notes from this time period, and will make them available to the student.
Reading

Reading

There is no one way to teach reading, and my methods reflect that. Oftentimes, schools lack the time or resources needed to properly teach students to read. As a tutor, my attention is focused squarely on tailoring methods to each individual student. More than that, I train students that reading is an active process, not a mechanical one. I have no doubt that I can help your student to be a "deep reader".
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

The reading sections of the SAT is often overlooked when preparing to test. I intend to instruct the student in successful strategies for maximizing their score while minimizing the time spent on it. These are strategies that I, myself, utilized when taking the test, and they can be of benefit for any student.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

SAT Writing was added to the SAT battery of tests in order to give schools a better picture of the whole student. For those wishing to boost their SAT scores, the writing section is the easiest place to do so. While it is the most subjective of the sections, there are, in fact, specific writing tasks that testers are looking for. The aim of this subject is to stress those points.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I tailor this subject to the needs of the student. For example, a student needing help with a standardized test will receive instruction specific to that, while another student needing vocabulary help in a biology class would receive instruction relevant to that subject matter.
World History

World History

Due to the nature of this subject, this subject is treated as a "catch all" for places, times, and events not already covered by another subject i.e. European History. I will specifically cover the "Cradles of Civilization" and ancient, non-Western cultures.
Writing

Writing

Though I am familiar with technical writing, my formal education skews towards creative fiction, poetry, and essay writing.
