A University of Chicago B.A., M.A., and Ph.D., I have taught political philosophy and related subjects at the college level for over 25 years. A University of Chicago B.A., M.A., and Ph.D., I have taught political philosophy and related subjects at the college level for over 25 years. In that time, I have read and reviewed more than 3,000 essays. I teach undergraduates at every level including, because I lead a first-year seminar nearly every fall, students who are just out of high school and learning how to meet or exceed college-level expectations.
I am a versatile writer who has published books with Cambridge University Press and Princeton University Press. My book, Let’s Be Reasonable: A Conservative Case for Liberal Education, was selected for the Wall Street Journal's Best of the February Bookshelf in 2021 and, by Forbes’s higher education columnist as a Best Higher Education book of 2021. In addition to my academic work, I have published hundreds of blog posts, essays, and reviews for publications like the Wall Street Journal, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Dispatch, and Commentary Magazine.
I am an experienced provider of writing feedback, not only as a teacher, but as an external reviewer of numerous books, book proposals, articles, and reports.
I can use this experience to help high school students to get ready for college, college students to step up their essay writing, graduate students to polish a dissertation, or any writer to get published or improve his or her writing for other reasons. I am also happy to work with high school students, adult learners, or traditional college students on reading texts, like Machiavelli’s The Prince or Plato’s Republic, carefully.
