I was proudly a geeky math and science student and then I discovered percussion and rock and roll...and Marching Band!! My history throughout my life has been diverse.
I have an MBA in Tax and Finance and began my college career as an engineering student but switched to accounting. I became bored with that so I left my controllership position at Coca-Cola to become a financial advisor. I calculate everything in my head from miles per gallon, time saved by incremental increases in speed driven and unit prices when shopping. It's fun and useful and I know how to teach the practical side of math, which then helps kids understand their algebraic concepts better. One has to take the fear and/or boredom out of math, and their students will be successful.
Not only have I tutored my own son to be in calculus in 10th grade but I helped a friend by teaching her son Algebra in a week to stay out of summer school. That made me love teaching because I really believed that I could help even the most challenged student pass algebra. That's very gratifying. I love kids and I want them to succeed! They're all capable. They just need to be shown and told that.
