I grew up in a teaching family; both my parents had degrees in education. Therefore, I was naturally fascinated by the art of extending knowledge. Throughout my life, I developed skills to teach complex concepts effectively. My first formal work as a tutor began in my senior year in high school - 12 years ago. I tutored my classmates in math and science topics in preparation for the exit exams (equivalent to the SAT). Throughout college I tutored high school and university students in math, physics and chemistry. I graduated college summa cum laude with a BSc in chemistry (minor in biology). I am currently doing a chemistry master’s program at Temple University.
I also served as high school chemistry and math (algebra, trigonometry, geometry) teacher during my years in college. I attended regular teacher training conferences which helped me standardized my teaching approach. One of my classes had eight students. This gave me the opportunity to work with students individually, subsequently developing my skills in teaching students with different learning styles.
My tutoring/teaching philosophy is “tell the student what you are going to teach, teach it, and tell them you’ve taught it” (paraphrased). In all concepts in math and chemistry, I believe in presenting first principle techniques to the student to enable them to apply the concept to different scenarios. I very patiently present topics or solve a problem from as many different perspectives as are necessary. I start tutoring by giving a quick assessment of the student’s level of understanding on the subject and learning behavior. Then I will proceed to present the subject following prepared lesson plan and applying teaching methodology that best matches the student’s learning style. I end with a quick assessment to determine the student’s level of understanding after being taught the lesson.
