Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I lectured at Johns Hopkins University for 3 years, as a graduate student in the Writing Seminars.
Debate

Debate

I've taught argumentation and rhetorical analysis as part of teaching AP Language and Composition for 6 years. I've helped students prepare for debate and strengthen all parts of an argument from claims to compelling evidence to shining conclusions.
English

English

I have taught grade 9-12 ELA for many years, specializing in literature and writing, especially essay writing and Creative Writing. I have experience teaching kids with diagnosed and undiagnosed learning differences, as well as extensive experience helping ESL/ESOL students in East Asia and Latin America succeed in a mainstream US classroom.
Essay Writing

I taught essays for 20 years as part of my classroom experience as an ELA teacher.
Fiction Writing

Fiction Writing

I lectured at Johns Hopkins in the Writing Seminars for 3 years, as a graduate student in Fiction.
Literature

Literature

I have written and published academic essays, and I've applied to and had papers accepted at conferences. I can coach you to similar success so you can present your research at conferences and boost your chances of getting into graduate programs. I can help you prepare to present at a conference.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have years of experience in helping students become better self-editors by way of techniques like reading aloud a piece of writing to a listener and making notes as you go. I also make many personalized comments on student writing, which will help you make powerful changes to your draft.
PSAT

PSAT

Many people do not understand the power of the PSAT/NMSQT in building your pathway to college and scholarships. Not many schools put a focus on preparing students for the exam and kids don't realize it's important when they take it in fall of Junior year. It's possible to prepare for the PSAT and to do well on it, and it will grease the way for you to do many more impressive academic things and build your candidacy for a top college. Let me help you build your vocabulary, reading, and writing before you take it in fall of 11th grade.
Reading

Reading

For many years, I've helped students find their passion in reading. I often start with short sample readings to see what interests a student and build them up to longer texts from there. I believe reading is the single most important part of your education, and I'm committed to helping kids discover it. We need great books in this age of machines and robots. College interviewers WILL ASK you what your favorite reading is -- let me help you explore and prepare to answer this question really well!
Regents

Regents

I started teaching in a NYC Brooklyn public school, where I had 5 years of experience teaching kids Regents skills in the classroom. I also helped administer the exam to kids and assisted ELL learners in understanding questions.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I find it so empowering and really fun to help students with study skills. I love seeing how impactful students can be in their own lives by improving on things like time management and organization. I love titles like James Clear's _Atomic Habits_ to help students understand the science behind excellent habits! These are lifelong skills that strengthen other parts of students' lives -- the gift that keeps on giving. I can work exclusively with students on study skills or dribble study skills into my work in any subject or skill. We can all pay more attention to these very important skills!
