I first earned my BA in East Asian Studies and Mandarin Chinese at Williams College, and contributed to a published Mandarin textbook. I then taught Beginning Mandarin at Concordia Language Villages, where I worked with primary and middle school students in a fully immersive environment. Immersion demands more than classroom instruction — I was present and responsive to students' language needs throughout the day, which gave me a nuanced sense of where beginners struggle and what actually helps. I designed my own curriculum and kept engagement central throughout.
I later taught Beginning Chinese at Panda Cub Academy in the Bay Area, working with both young learners and high schoolers. More recently I've tutored individually in both Chinese language and English composition, with students going on to gain admission to competitive academic programs. and Panda Cub Academy. I lived and worked in Taiwan for two years, and can coach either the Taiwanese or Mainland accent, both traditional and simplified characters.
As a native English speaker, I can explain why Mandarin works the way it does in a way that native speakers often can't, because I once had to figure that out myself! Tones, characters, sentence structure, the logic of measure words — I remember what made these click for me, and I bring that patience and clarity to every session.
Whether you've never spoken a word of Chinese in your life or you're just finding your footing, you're in the right place.
